About The Position

The Division of Rehabilitation Services is seeking to hire a Building/ Grounds Maintenance Worker to perform grounds maintenance at the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired (ISVI). The Building/Grounds Maintenance Workers will also serve as an assistant to carpenter, painter, plumber, electrician and engineer in the performance of a variety of semiskilled work. This position will perform preventative maintenance and repairs on lawn care equipment i.e. push and/or riding mowers, tractors, weed eaters, sprayers, spreaders, and other power equipment.

Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of high school plus one (1) year of maintenance work experience preferably associated with the building and mechanical trades and/or heavy equipment operation.
  • Requires a possession of a valid Class C Driver’s License.
  • Requires ability to attain and maintain an operator/ applicator license from the Illinois Department of Agriculture.
  • Requires the ability to use heavy machinery, lift and move heavy furniture and equipment moving up to 50 lbs independently and up to 100 lbs with assistance.
  • Requires the ability to use hand and power tools to perform semiskilled manual work in a safe manner.
  • Requires ability to stand on feet for long periods of time, climb stairs and ladders, work overhead and on hands and knees.
  • Requires ability to tolerate extreme weather temperature changes and exposure to fumes.
  • Must meet Illinois School for the Visually Impaired health and safety requirements.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.

Responsibilities

  • Performs grounds maintenance at the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired (ISVI).
  • Serves as an assistant to carpenter, painter, plumber, electrician and engineer in the performance of a variety of semiskilled work.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and repairs on lawn care equipment i.e. push and/or riding mowers, tractors, weed eaters, sprayers, spreaders, and other power equipment.
  • Picks up rubbish and debris.
  • May occasionally provide guidance and direction to new employees, student workers and/or seasonal employees.
  • Participates in departmental meetings and other meetings and trainings as needed.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
