About The Position

St. James Parish Government is hiring a Building Custodian under the Operations Department. JOB FUNCTION: To provide basic manual tasks in maintaining the cleanliness, sanitary conditions, and appearance of parish buildings and facilities. This position is considered an introductory level. This position is classified as essential during declared emergencies or natural disasters. This is a nonexempt position, forty hours per week. Individuals in this position are able to complete the majority of their duties and responsibilities with a minimum amount of supervision. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Includes any combination of the following illustrative examples of duties and responsibilities including but not limited to: Cleans bathrooms, offices, hallways, and any other assigned areas by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, and polishing Empties and decontaminates trash containers Moves, rearranges and dusts furniture and fixtures Mixes or blends routine cleaning solutions to proper concentrations as necessary for various tasks Cleans and waxes floors using industrial-size mops and/or machines Strips and polishes floors using buffing machines Washes blinds, windows, and walls with prescribed solutions Operates wet/dry vacuums for cleaning and shampooing carpeted areas Maintains equipment by washing and cleaning Knowledge of the operating procedures and maintenance of equipment operated General knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety rules and regulations in equipment operation Ability to perform the physical labor required of the position Ability to identify operating problems of equipment operated Other duties as assigned QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: High School diploma or general education diploma (GED) and 3 months related experience and/or training in custodial, housekeeping, food service, or other related work. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, and divide into all units of measurement using whole numbers. REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors, near moving mechanical parts, and is regularly exposed to vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Requirements
