About The Position

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is committed to enhancing the quality of care provided to patients. The Building Automation Specialist contributes to the strategic vision and planning, development, implementation, functionality and evaluation of building automation systems (BAS) that support, enhance and ensure effective, safe, efficient, and uninterrupted operations of mechanical systems and equipment, building controls and utilities for the Wexner Medical Center. This Facilities Operations Department position supports Wexner Medical Center and university goals. Systems and equipment are operated 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This position is subject to callback. Under the general direction of the Manager, HVAC & Building Automation Systems, this position ensures the effective, safe, efficient, and uninterrupted operation of mechanical systems, building controls, and utilities to provide quality indoor air and a comfortable environment across over 6 million square feet of healthcare space. Responsibilities include daily management of HVAC, mechanical, and electrical systems; operational oversight of building automation systems (BAS); and assessment, resolution, and programming of HVAC-related controls issues. The role manages equipment commissioning, develops and monitors energy-saving processes, and sustains optimal HVAC performance throughout acute care, ambulatory, clinical, academic, laboratory, and business facilities both on and off campus. It also oversees assigned operations and capital funds, monitors utility budgets, and provides direction to the operational team. As the principal resource and subject matter expert for BAS, the position consults on major initiatives integrating BAS across departments, platforms, and networks. It analyzes, tests, and implements complex BAS solutions, aligning strategic requirements with evolving business needs. The role offers insight and guidance to leaders and peers on BAS strategies, policies, and methodologies. Additionally, it may respond to emergency situations such as mechanical or electrical outages and assist in evaluating and correcting problems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience required.
  • Two (2) years of prior work experience troubleshooting, repairing, installing, and testing of HVAC Systems and related equipment required.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical/mechanical blueprints and drawings
  • Valid Driver's License required
  • Candidates must have knowledge and experience with:
  • BACnet systems to include complex building HVAC system applications and engineering, LANs commands/configurations, alarming, scheduling, proprietary interfaces, integration and system management, PC operation and workstation software; network training and/or experience working with network configurations and troubleshooting; broad knowledge of a variety of Direct Digital Control systems; knowledge of UPS and Management Cards and set up; knowledge and hands on experience of Servers; knowledge of Switch Programming and IP infrastructure/networks.
  • HVAC systems, control systems, and electrical systems in industrial/commercial environments, including a working knowledge of:
  • Air Handling Systems
  • BACnet integration between multiple manufacturers
  • Chilled Water systems
  • Control Systems
  • Heating systems
  • Pneumatic Control Systems
  • Smoke control systems

  • Building Automation management, programing and networking experience
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced customer service environment
  • Ability to influence effectively at all levels within the organization
  • Ability to use and interpret data to drive decision making at both the tactical and strategic level
  • Demonstrated proficient diagnostic skills - able to systematically identify and resolve technical problem
