About The Position

As part of the University of Chicago, the Biological Sciences Division (BSD) pursues globally impactful solutions to seemingly unsolvable challenges through rigorous research, innovative education, and comprehensive care and healing. The Biological Sciences Division – Facilities Services (BSD-FS) group provides the environment for these advancements, managing approximately 2 million gross feet of space across the University of Chicago’s Hyde Park campus and serving various community members including faculty, staff, students, and hospital personnel. The BSD-FS Service Worker is responsible for extensive interaction with BSD's faculty, staff, and students, providing support and services from the dock/shipping area. This role involves maintaining and overseeing all dock duties, including receiving, coordinating, tracking, and distributing all incoming parcels and packages. The Service Worker will also handle recharge accounts, purchase orders, invoices, data entry, and other clerical office duties. Physical demands include moving heavy merchandise, packages, and dewars (tanks) up to 800 lbs, handling hazardous chemicals, and managing unique and expensive equipment in high-security areas.

Requirements

  • High school diploma.
  • Completion of advanced job-related education or designation programs, such as OSHA 10 or 10-hour card.
  • Completion of facilities/dock related certificate or designation programs, such as CDL (Commercial Driver License), forklift certification.

  • Relevant shipping/receiving/dock experience.
  • Work with faculty, executive administrators, and or Plant department in customer service role.

Responsibilities

  • Daily logging, scanning, distribution, and deliveries from UPS, DHL, Federal Express, Airborne, etc., inside the BSD campus buildings and other BSD departments, including the Hospital. This includes perishable items (donation of human organs, etc.) which are cause for immediate delivery.
  • Responsible for keys to highly sensitive and secure units (labs, equipment, cylinders, gases and other research materials).
  • Create and maintain an accurate tracking system in the receiving area.
  • Scan, tag cylinders, and enter results into database.
  • Sort parcels/packages.
  • Retrieve, file, and match packing slips (invoices) related to purchasing orders.
  • Handle returns of erroneous deliveries.
  • Unload and transport helium dewars, transport empty dewars back to loading dock for pickup.
  • Maintain inventory of liquid nitrogen dewars, and refill dewars as needed for technicians and students.
  • Fill in for co-workers on vacation or when the BSD-FS department is shorthanded in other areas, like the stock room, etc. This involves answering the phones, delivering gas cylinders/dewars to the Hospital and other units, tagging dewers/cylinders, and overseeing Stockroom functions of purchasing, receiving, customer service, etc.
  • Operate box trucks.
  • Provide facilities services support for day-to-day operations, including assembling, disassembling, and moving of furniture and equipment as needed.
  • Assist with, but not limited to, office relocations, furniture moving, shelving and removal of other equipment as necessary; preparation of conference room setups; and any/all other daily facilities requests as needed.
  • Drive and assist other co-workers with deliveries using University-owned equipment.
  • Help with the unloading of equipment and packages, when needed.
  • Clean dock receiving area, keeping tanks, crates, etc., in order.
  • Keep receiving dock driveway clear of traffic.
  • Properly store equipment for PI's and the building engineers.
  • Perform building walkthroughs to proactively identify infrastructure and cosmetic inadequacies.
  • Serve as facility point of contact for evening and weekend events.
  • Assist with inventory cycle counts and control activities as directed.
  • Responsibilities consist of reporting inventory issues, assisting others in the transport of stock, and maintaining certain security and maintenance activities.
  • Track and influence correspondence with the Chicago Distribution Center regarding inventory matters and best practices.
  • Coordinate with staff of client presses to achieve inventory goals.
  • Respond to inquiries and proactively research and resolve inventory issues.
  • Assist with file storage services for campus offices and the inventory reduction program.
  • Coordinates local deliveries of stock and arranges for storage of sensitive files.
  • Routinely meet with and sample inventory counts to support visiting auditors.
  • Perform other related work as needed.
