About The Position

The primary function of this position is to operate and maintain television and radio equipment. This position is responsible for repair and maintenance of television and radio equipment located at the University Television Center (UTC), the campus radio station (WMSV-FM), and at various locations on and off campus. This position provides operational support to both television and radio productions. The ability to troubleshoot and repair equipment to the component level with a minimum of supervision is important to this position. The ability to perform networking and operating system configuration and trouble shooting in a professional audio and video environment is also important to this position. The University Television Center provides broadcast television and visual media production services to the university and external communities.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree or higher in electronics, broadcast technology, communication, or related course of study or equivalent, relevant experience.
  • At least 1-3 years of experience maintaining and installing broadcast equipment or other similar media systems.
  • Ability to work long and irregular hours when required.
  • Excellent organizational, task management, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Take direction well and be able to work with vendor support to resolve issues.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to adapt to changing needs and priorities. Ability to prioritize assigned tasks.
  • Ability to make decisions and take corrective action without supervision.
  • Knowledge of general electrical wiring techniques including use of UPS systems and circuit loading.
  • A working knowledge of television equipment and integrated systems as well as skills in high level electronic maintenance.
  • Hands on experience with audio/video switching, connectivity, routing, terminations and signal flow.
  • Must have knowledge in the use of basic electrical and electronic test equipment.
  • Ability to read, understand and maintain technical documentation and drawings.
  • Knowledge of essential media-related IT concepts including (but not limited to); Microsoft workstation and server operating systems, the MacOS operating system, TCP/IP, SAN/NAS systems, backup systems, media systems IT architecture, system wiring and system performance analysis, NAS backup and archive best practices and strategies.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, electronics, or similar field with 3 or more years' experience maintaining broadcast equipment.
  • A working knowledge of SMPTE and other relevant standards and FCC regulations is desired, but not a requirement.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain university television and radio production equipment.
  • Assist in maintaining Federal Communications Commission (FCC) compliance for WMSV-FM.
  • Install new production systems and components to meet future needs, including system integration and control.
  • Assist in maintaining technical documentation for UTC and outside facilities and maintain accurate records of all technical services performed.
  • Maintain university cable channel playout system (MSTV) and monitor feeds as required.
  • Configure computer networking and operating systems and troubleshoot in a professional audio and video environment. Resolve software and/or hardware problems beginning at the lowest level (user–tech-vendor).
  • Set up and configure video and technical production systems including audio, video and data routing, control, signal processing, video cameras, production switchers, audio mixers, and intercom.
  • Set up, break down and troubleshoot video cameras, cables and production switchers on remote field productions. Establish and maintain fiber optic, TCP/IP, MPEG and/or other transmission links.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and recommend appropriate solutions including vendor repair, in-house repair or equipment replacement. Coordinate repair of equipment with outside vendors.
  • Fabricate cables, wire patch panels and bulkheads, and make small part modifications.
  • Maintain equipment storage area, workshop, tools, spare parts and technical supplies inventories. Maintain accurate asset inventory and vehicle records.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
