About The Position

GovFirst is seeking a dedicated and safety -focused Bridge -Tunnel Operations Crew Member to support onsite operations within the Hampton Roads Bridge -Tunnel (HRBT), Monitor -Merrimac Memorial Bridge -Tunnel (MMMBT), and related facilities. The successful candidate will perform inspection, traffic control, patrol, and incident response duties while interacting professionally with the public, emergency responders, and operations staff.This role is essential to maintaining roadway safety, traffic flow, facility security, and emergency response readiness in a high -volume transportation environment.

  • Strong customer service skills and professional demeanor.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Knowledge of traffic control operations, rules, and procedures.
  • Familiarity with Hampton Roads interstates and local roadways.
  • Strong command of the English language (verbal and written); Spanish bilingual skills are a plus.
  • General working knowledge of vehicle maintenance.
  • Experience with radio, telephone, and dispatch communications.
  • Computer proficiency, including Windows -based applications and Apple devices.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • 90 -day probationary period.
  • Required VDOT and industry -specific training.
  • Hazardous work environment involving on -foot roadway operations.
  • All -season, all -hour interstate driving and facility coverage.
  • Extended periods of standing or sitting may be required.
  • Subject to short or no -notice work assignments.
  • Safety apparel, organizational uniforms, and required equipment provided.
  • Performance monitored through routine evaluations.
  • Frequent interaction with the public and media.

Responsibilities

  • Staff inspection station locations to stop and inspect vehicles for over -height conditions, hazardous materials, security threats, and regulatory violations.
  • Accurately document vehicle inspections and incidents and communicate findings to the Operations Crew Lead and Control Room.
  • Direct and control traffic throughout the facility using approved traffic control techniques (hand signals, STOP/SLOW paddles, whistle, and verbal commands).
  • Maintain a visible security presence, remain alert to suspicious activities, and promptly investigate and report concerns.
  • Assist State and Local Police, Fire, EMS, and maintenance personnel during emergencies and routine operations.
  • Respond to roadway incidents including vehicle crashes, disabled or abandoned vehicles, debris removal, tunnel evacuations, and traffic detours.
  • Provide roadside assistance to motorists, including tire changes, battery jumps, fuel assistance, and debris removal when authorized.
  • Serve as a member of an emergency response team and respond promptly to incidents within the assigned footprint of responsibility.
  • Operate patrol and support vehicles including SUVs, passenger vans, and heavy -duty pickup trucks equipped with arrow boards.
  • Perform pre -trip and post -trip vehicle inspections and maintain readiness of assigned equipment.
  • Dispatch and deploy Incident Response Trailers, including inspection, setup, and post -use restocking.
  • Operate hand tools (e.g., shovels, brooms) and perform routine housekeeping to maintain clean and safe work areas.
  • Conduct inspections of facilities, grounds, buildings, and multi -story industrial structures.
  • Process over -height violations at HRBT and MMMBT, including vehicle escorts and turnaround procedures.
  • Provide wide -load escorts utilizing designated vehicles and equipment.
  • Monitor roadway conditions for congestion, lane closures, signal malfunctions, and safety hazards.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with motorists, coworkers, supervisors, and Control Room personnel.
  • Operate two -way radio systems and computer -based systems to relay accurate, timely information.
  • Complete detailed and accurate documentation including inspection reports, vehicle logs, and incident reports.
  • Perform light to moderate manual labor, including lifting up to 50 pounds, prolonged standing or sitting, walking, bending, pushing, and pulling.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by a Supervisor or Senior Project Manager.
