About The Position

Sarasota Memorial First Physicians Group is a successful, multi-specialty group with over 700 physicians and Advanced Practice Providers and a 31-year history in the Sarasota community. We are seeking to employ a Breast Surgical Oncology Physician Assistant to join an established and high-quality breast program in Sarasota, Florida. The system's flagship 897-bed campus, Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Sarasota, has been consistently recognized as one of the nation's best hospitals . A regional referral center providing the greatest depth and breadth of care to the community, the campus also includes state-of-the-art specialized centers of care, including the Brian D. Jellison Cancer Institute Oncology Tower , Rehabilitation Pavilion and recently opened Cornell Behavioral Health Pavilion . Building Hope for Cancer Patients - responding to the rising number of local cancer cases and the complexity of modern oncology care, the Sarasota Public Hospital Board supported the addition of three premier oncology facilities: a Radiation Oncology Center that opened in 2020, a 56-bed Oncology Tower that opened in 2021, and an Outpatient Cancer Pavilion slated to open - Spring 2026 . Once completed, the seven-story Outpatient Cancer Pavilion will include a new breast health center, outpatient surgery suites, radiation oncology, infusion services, diagnostic imaging and integrative and supportive care. Sarasota Memorial's cancer care teams include cancer-certified nurses, therapists, social workers, navigators, researchers, genetic counselors, rehab therapists and others who collaborate to address the physical and emotional needs of each patient with cancer. Responsibilities include: Will join two Breast Surgical Oncologists and three Advanced Practice Providers (APPs). Full-time position, Monday-Friday, with a 7:00 AM start time. Practice at a single location: SMH Sarasota.

Requirements

  • Current NCCPA or ANCC certification required and must also have an active license by the State of Florida by the time of hire.
  • Board Certified Physician Assistant, Board Certified Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner who has active, relevant and routine experience in 2 of the last 4 years (defined as at least 500 acute care inpatient encounters over two years).
  • Board Certified Adult/Family Nurse Practitioner , who has active, relevant, and routine experience in 2 of the last 4 years (defined as at least 1,000 acute care inpatient encounters over two years).
  • BLS required.
  • Require current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Require bachelor degree from accredited physician assistant training program.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive evaluations for patients with breast disease, including history, physical examination, and clinical assessment in clinic and inpatient setting.
  • Perform office-based procedures such as skin/punch biopsies, incision and drainage of abscesses, needle aspirations, wound care, suture placement and removal, and JP drain removal.
  • Provide preoperative, intraoperative (first assist), and postoperative care for breast surgical oncology patients.
  • Assist intraoperatively with closure, drain placement, retraction, suturing, and excisional biopsies.
  • Deliver inpatient care, including daily rounds, order management, and discharge planning.
  • Educate patients and families on diagnosis, treatment options, and supportive care.
