About The Position

The Division of Surgical Oncology/Breast Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine has a 1.0 FTE faculty position available at the rank of Instructor for a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA). Under the direction of the full-time faculty or designee, this position provides outpatient medical care services at the University of Colorado Hospital for the Diane O'Connor Thompson Breast Center. Primary functions of the position include providing care for patients with various breast diseases/concerns, including high risk for breast cancer, idiopathic granulomatous mastitis, breast infections, breast pain, nipple discharge, breast masses, etc.. Provider will also provide care to breast cancer patients including performing annual follow-up visits and pre and post-operative care for patients in collaboration with breast surgeons. Position will primarily be at Anschutz Medical Campus but may be required to work in other Breast Program locations such as, Highlands Ranch Hospital, Cherry Creek Ambulatory Surgery Center, or other locations. The APP will have opportunity for academic promotion judged on criteria of demonstrated excellence as a clinician/educator/scholar.

Requirements

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
Minimum Qualifications for NP:
MSN required from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program
Current Advanced Practice Registered Nurse licensure by a national professional organization.
Current Registered Nurse licensure in the state of Colorado
Admission to the Advanced Practice Registry of the Colorado Board of Nursing
Prescriptive authority required
Current BLS certification
Minimum qualifications for PA:
Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program
Board certified
Allowed to practice in the state of Colorado
Prescriptive authority
Current BLS certification

Responsibilities

Independently performing age-appropriate history and physical examinations
Accurate and efficient documentation in EPIC system
Advisement of patient scheduling based on concern of disease
Reviewing medical records to determine if appropriate for clinic
Requesting outside diagnostic tests and pathology/cytology as needed
Ordering and interpretation of labs or diagnostic tests
Prescribing medications as needed
Perform in-office procedures as indicated including aspiration, port removals, incision and drainages
Conducting peer to peer review or writing medical necessity letters with insurance companies for pre-authorization of tests as appropriate
Independently see patients
Collaboration with team members to finalize patient plans and assisting with ordering tests and referrals as needed
Following up with results and in-basket management
Performing e-consults for high risk patients
Facilitating staff, patient and family decision making by providing educational tools
Compliance with hospital protocols/standards.
Attending departmental meetings on a regular basis
Participate in research and QI projects
Participate in Community outreach to promote and educate about the Breast Center Program/Breast diseases
Participating in research in conjunction with faculty expectations
Tracking patient outcomes/data
Assisting with database accuracy and management
Compliance with hospital protocols/standards.
Attending departmental meetings on a regular basis
Participate in Breast program development (such as, input to institutional Breast website and community outreach) to enhance the Breast multidisciplinary program
