About The Position

The Daily Beast delivers award-winning original reporting and sharp opinion from big personalities in the arenas of politics, pop-culture, world news, and more. Fiercely independent and armed with irreverent intelligence, we now reach more than 20 million readers per month. We are based in New York and are an operating business of IAC. What we can offer you The Breaking News Editor is expected to assign and edit quick, high impact stories for The Daily Beast on national news, politics, entertainment and more. He or she must have a proven ability to conceive, develop and produce stories that stay a half-step ahead of the news. In addition, he or she must also have demonstrated skills to write his or her own stories that weave interviews, profile material, anecdotes, and exclusive details into compelling narratives. The Editor then must be able to effectively communicate those stories across TV, radio, the Web and social media.

Requirements

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, juggling multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Willingness to collaborate with other reporters, editors, and media partners.
  • Strong research, writing, and reporting skills.
  • Advanced problem-solving skills.
  • Proven skill as a narrative writer and story teller.
  • Commitment and ability to continue to develop sources.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of and experience with radio, television and the Web.
  • Fluency in social media, story promotion skills.
  • A self-starter who can conceive and execute stories with impact.
  • Ability to take initiative, receive constructive feedback, and work with minimal supervision.
  • At least five years of reporting and editing experience.
  • Based in New York City.

Responsibilities

  • Help supervise a small team of staff writers covering breaking developments in politics, entertainment, tech, national, and international news.
  • Use sources, documents, computer-assisted reporting, and other journalistic tools to develop, report, and write his or her own stories on these topics.
  • Fact-check political, government, and corporate leaders on these issues of the day and spot emerging trends and counter-intuitive narratives in the emerging public discussion around science.
  • Deliver timely stories and well-crafted narratives.
  • Conceive compelling story and project ideas to discuss with The Beast’s top editors in New York City.
  • Help edit, guide, mentor, and collaborate with other members of The Daily Beast staff.
  • Adhere to the ethical code, policies and procedures of The Daily Beast.
  • Ability to discuss stories, debate key issues on TV, radio, other online outlets.
  • Contribute ideas for online graphics, polls, and other means of enhancing audience engagement
