About The Position

Breaking News Editor, The Dallas Morning News Lead a 13-member breaking news team in one of the country’s largest markets. Job description: The Breaking & Trending team is at the center of The Dallas Morning News . Most major news stories start with this team, which drives our daily conversation with readers in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, the fourth-largest metro in the United States. The team has nine reporters and four editors who staff our desk from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week. We write stories across all topics, sometimes handing off to specialized teams, but often following breaking stories with longer-term enterprise that gets at the how and why things happened and tells the stories of the people and communities involved. We want an experienced editor to help this team be the best in our market. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in journalism or a related field
  • At least seven years of experience in journalism or a related field, and at least three years managing a newsroom team
  • Experience covering and editing breaking news
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • The ability to make thoughtful decisions in a high-pressure environment
  • Familiarity with audience analytics
  • Ability to read and assess staff content, work effectively under deadline pressure, communicate clearly, adapt quickly to changes in technology and workflow and lead a diverse team of reporters and editors

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of three editors and nine reporters with urgency and excellence to own breaking and trending news in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area
  • Help reporters and editors be proactive and set priorities in coverage
  • Develop and execute plans for breaking news events
  • Push for depth and context in stories to draw distinction from other outlets
  • Coach editors and reporters on developing enterprise on breaking news events
  • Work collaboratively with other editors to cover breaking news across the newsroom
  • Provide day-to-day leadership and supervision to assigned staff, ensuring operational goals and objectives are met effectively and efficiently
  • Responsible for all aspects of employee management, including recruitment, interviewing, selection, onboarding, and retention
  • Conducts regular performance evaluations; provides constructive feedback and coaching to support employee development and accountability
  • Administer progressive discipline and counseling as needed, in alignment with company policies and procedures
  • Oversee scheduling, workload distribution, and delegation of responsibilities to ensure balanced team performance and productivity
