About The Position

The Bosun for the Training Ship reports directly to the Chief Mate and is responsible for all deck maintenance while training and providing direct oversight to students (cadets), ensuring they develop safe, efficient work habits consistent with accepted industry standards. Demonstrates strong self-motivation with the ability to independently identify, report, and resolve vessel and safety deficiencies. The Office of Marine Programs at Cal Poly Maritime Academy is responsible for Waterfront Operations, the Training Ship, and Summer Sea Term. The Training Ship Golden Bear is where cadets bring Learn by Doing to life – on campus and at sea. Students train aboard the training ship during the academic year and during Summer Sea Term, applying classroom theory to real-world maritime systems.

Requirements

Ability to supervise unskilled students (cadets).
Ability to communicate effectively via writing and in person with all levels of staff, faculty, and students(cadet).
Ability to maintain a budget.
High school diploma or GED.
At least five years sea time, of that two must be in the capacity of Bosun.
Merchant Mariner Credential with A ble Bodied Seaman merchant marine rating
Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Endorsements
Transportation Identification Card (TWIC), or ability to obtain by date of hire
Medical Certificate with international and domestic endorsements
U.S Passport
