About The Position

The Logistics and Materials Specialist will work aboard the training ship and provide support, record keeping and inventory management of spare parts, supplies and technical documents for the training ship. The above tasks provide support to the Chief Engineer and First Engineer as well as other ship officers, faculty and staff regarding the area of shipboard activity. In addition, this position will provide direct support to the Chief Engineer and the Waterfront staff as required . The Office of Marine Programs at Cal Poly Maritime Academy is responsible for Waterfront Operations, the Training Ship, and Summer Sea Term. The Training Ship is where cadets bring Learn by Doing to life – on campus and at sea. Students train aboard the training ship during the academic year and during Summer Sea Term, applying classroom theory to real-world maritime systems.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university.
  • One year of technical or administrative experience.
  • Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
  • A graduate degree in a related field may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) upon hire.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) upon hire.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid U.S. Passport upon hire.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate inventories and inventory records for shipboard supplies, government-furnished equipment (GFE), consumables, and controlled items, ensuring compliance with state and federal requirements.
  • Maintain detailed maintenance and repair records for vessels, equipment, and supplies to support operational readiness, audits, and lifecycle management.
  • Manage procurement records from initial requisition through delivery and purchase order closeout, ensuring accuracy, traceability, and adherence to procurement policies.
  • Maintain, organizing, and updating equipment manuals, technical drawings, and related documentation to support maintenance, inspections, and operational use.
  • Manage vessel storerooms, including organization, inventory control, and distribution of supplies and equipment to support continuous maritime operations.
  • Provide direct support to the Chief Engineer and the Waterfront staff as required
