About The Position

Performs complex specimen processing and testing in specialized laboratory area using standard operating procedures and proper safety procedures. The technician is responsible for specimen receipt, identification verification, processing, shipping and storage. Processes large volumes of specimens for multiple protocols and accurately prepares lab specimens and containers with reagents as required for a specific study. Processes research specimens safely and accurately, assuring positive patient identification. Must be able to prioritize the workload in response to the specific needs of numerous protocols. Maintains an efficient, well-organized laboratory, manages supplies, assists in performing equipment maintenance, maintains quality control programs, and assists with development of processing instructions. Must use good judgment and independent problem resolution to carry out all aspects of the job. Ensures proper paperwork and shipping for all protocols. Ensures accurate storage for all specimen types. Supports the maintenance of all protocols and updates to protocols. Works with outside facilities to accommodate patients. Works with various computer information systems on a daily basis. The role supports our Kits and Shipping Teams. Requirements

  • High school diploma and minimum one year of processing experience required.
  • In the absence of a degree, consideration will be given to an individual with significant working experience in a laboratory setting, which has provided a solid understanding of lab techniques, equipment and safety.
  • Must be highly organized, efficient, and able to work independently as well as with a team, demonstrates critical-thinking skills, and able to tolerate many interruptions.
  • Must possess good analytical problem solving and written/oral communication skills.
  • Must be able to accurately read specimen labels and follow standard operating procedures.
  • In addition, must be capable of doing general trouble-shooting and problem solving regarding laboratory procedures and equipment operation.
  • Works flexible hours to meet workload demands and accommodates schedule changes, off-shifts, holidays, and weekend assignments.
  • Must have meticulous attention to detail.
  • Annual (state) certification for bioterrorism as required and shipping/handling along with completion of Mayo Clinic’s Human Subject Training required within 30 days of hire.
  • Within 18 months of hire, must possess a basic understanding of LEAN and 5S process.
