About The Position

A sludge hauler under the direction and instruction of the certified wastewater operator is responsible for transporting sewage sludge from wastewater treatment facilities to disposal sites, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. This involves operating specialized equipment, adhering to all required safety protocols, and maintaining accurate records.

Requirements

  • Valid driver's license: A commercial driver's license (CDL) B with air brake and tanker endorsements required
  • Experience: Experience operating large trucks and specialized equipment is preferred
  • Knowledge: Familiarity with sludge hauling procedures, environmental regulations, and safety protocols is essential
  • Physical fitness: The job requires physical strength and stamina to perform tasks such as loading and unloading sludge
  • Attention to detail: Accuracy and attention to detail are important when handling and transporting sludge, to ensure compliance with regulations
  • Employee must meet the following requirements which are necessary to successfully perform the essential functions of this class: bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, twisting, kneeling, and reaching both to ground level and overhead; lifts and carries up to 100 pounds and/or pushes and pulls up to 100 pounds as required; holds and grips objects; subject to working in awkward positions and periods of prolonged walking, sitting, or standing
  • Primarily outdoors with exposure to dust and pollen; subject to a variety of extreme weather conditions; susceptible to mechanical and electrical hazards associated with equipment and wiring; may be exposed to hazardous chemicals and other safety hazards due to working in and around traffic or depending upon assignment working with and around agricultural properties; subject to constant and extreme noise, poor lighting and ventilation, fumes, and odors

Responsibilities

  • Operating and maintaining specialized equipment: This includes operating a sludge truck, pumping equipment, and other related machinery used in sludge hauling
  • Loading and unloading sludge: Accurately and safely load sludge into the truck, ensuring proper distribution and preventing spills
  • Transporting sludge: Drive the truck safely and efficiently to designated disposal sites, adhering to speed limits and traffic laws
  • Ensuring environmental compliance: Adhere to all relevant environmental regulations and safety protocols related to sludge hauling
  • Documentation and record keeping: Maintain accurate records of sludge hauled, disposal locations, and any other required documentation
  • Cleaning and maintaining equipment: Regularly clean and maintain the sludge truck and related equipment to ensure optimal performance and safety
  • Safety protocols: Follow all safety procedures, including wearing appropriate protective gear and reporting any safety hazards
  • Communication: Communicate effectively with supervisors, dispatchers, and other personnel involved in the sludge hauling process
  • All other duties as assigned
