Expected hours of work per week : 10-20 hours Work Location & Hours : Biology Commons (Mills 240) and surrounding biology labs Qualifications for Position: Undergraduate student (sophomore or higher standing) Biology Major. GPA in biology classes >3.5 10-20 hours of availability, mostly during the day but some tutoring hours in the evening; individual student schedules vary, but may include times from 7:30am through 10pm. Expected Duties and Responsibilities: Tutoring Teaching lab setup, teardown and routine cleaning and organization Assessing and helping to manage lab and office supply inventory Tidying of Biology Commons area Glassware washing Grading Miscellaneous office tasks relating to ongoing departmental operations Resume skills development (NACE Competencies required by employers) to be developed Career & Self-Development including Developing hands-on experience in laboratory procedures, equipment operation, and laboratory-related problem-solving . Gaining exposure to biological research methods, instructional techniques, and academic support . Cultivating mentorship relationships with faculty and engaging in professional development opportunities . Communication in the form of Explaining biological concepts to peers during tutoring sessions. Interacting professionally with students, faculty, and staff to facilitate lab operations. Documenting lab preparations and inventory for efficient department function. Critical Thinking in the form of Troubleshooting lab setup issues . Evaluating student questions during tutoring and guiding them toward understanding concepts. Applying problem-solving skills to ensure smooth laboratory operations. Global Literacy displayed by Supporting diverse student populations in understanding biological concepts. Leadership through Training new work-study students on laboratory setup and procedures. Taking initiative in organizing and maintaining lab facilities. Acting as a liaison between students and faculty for academic support Professionalism by Demonstrating reliability and responsibility in job tasks. Maintaining confidentiality when handling student academic concerns. Balancing multiple responsibilities while maintaining a high level of work quality. Teamwork including Collaborating with faculty and peers to ensure efficient lab preparation and cleanup. Supporting fellow work-study students in shared responsibilities. Contributing to group projects within the biology department. Assisting in departmental events , such as science outreach or student recruitment Technology Using laboratory equipment such as microscopes, spectrophotometers, and centrifuges. Managing learning platforms (Canvas) for tutoring and assignment grading support.
