About The Position

This Biology Assistant is an AmeriCorps position. The participant will collect critical monitoring data on vegetation composition and structure that are a monitoring vital sign for Southwest Alaska national parks. Their post-season project will contribute to the future collection of this information by creating a streamlined workflow for assembling information about vegetation plots to be used in subsequent visits (maps, species lists, photos, route tracks and descriptions).

Requirements

  • United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien.
  • Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award
  • Prior to starting the position, agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check for the employer of record, Conservation Legacy, and a separate government security background check for the host site.
  • The applicant must be available to participate for the entire 20 Weeks in order to be considered and participate.

Nice To Haves

  • A successful participant must be physically fit and comfortable living and working in remote backcountry settings, have a working knowledge and or aptitude for vegetation identification, a strong work ethic, good interpersonal skills and good attention to detail and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Sampling forest vegetation plots in remote, backcountry locations in three national parks in southwest Alaska (Lake Clark, Katmai)
  • Identifying vascular and non-vascular plants to the species level
  • Assisting in the collection of voucher specimens, plot photos, environmental data, and plot coordinates (GPS)
  • Post-processing of instrumental data
  • Manual entry of plot data into a SQL database
  • Data QA/QC
  • Creating a workflow for preseason monitoring packet assembly, and report preparation

  • Weekly Living Allowance: $ 600.00 per week, fixed rate
  • Relocation Allowance: $ 1,100.00 (distributed as a one-time lump sum with first paycheck)
