About The Position

This Science Communication Assistant is an AmeriCorps position. The participant will support a vital component of science production by assisting authors with production of high-quality reports on ecological conditions in national parks. projects will help NPS scientists communicate key findings and continue to build on a multi-decade legacy of investigating natural resource conditions in parks. The position will also help raise awareness of how NPS natural resource inventories and monitoring can and are contributing to improved park management, especially in the face of accelerated changing conditions. The participant will contribute directly with the program’s Science Publications Team and participate in process revisions for efficiency. There will be an opportunity to assist in the development of templates, scripts, and macros and create model content that can further increase efficiency for future publications.

Requirements

  • United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien.
  • Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award
  • Prior to starting the position, agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check for the employer of record, Conservation Legacy, and a separate government security background check for the host site.
  • The applicant must be available to participate for the entire 52 Weeks in order to be considered and participate.

  • This position requires strong reading comprehension, research, and writing skills suitable to ensure consistency within technical scientific content as well as compliance of documents with layout standards.
  • The position is suitable for a candidate interested in publications, science writing, and graphics.
  • A commitment to, and ability to convey, the meaning of ecological science in the 21st century is desired.
  • Science writing experience is essential, with exceptional command of American English grammar.
  • Experience with HTML is preferred.
  • An interest in the National Park Service and learning and innovating while working alongside a team of NPS and partnering scientists is essential, as is the patience and desire to learn about the practice of communication within a federal bureaucracy and its sideboards of policy and optics.

Responsibilities

  • Reviewing science reports for compliance with formatting and layout in preparation for publication of final versions to PDF or HTML.
  • Assisting authors in ensuring the consistency of tables and figures in reports with narratives that describe results.
  • Learn and practice using tools that convert word processor files to PDF and HTML.
  • Compose web content summarizing science reports to assist in conveying key stories about the impact of natural resource inventories and monitoring (I&M) in selected NPS units across the nation.
  • Finalizing layout for dozens of science reports, with accompanying graphics, to be published in an agency online platform
  • Layout or editorial support for web articles to accompany each report
  • Internal promotion of the articles and creation of other I&M-related content, such as news items and the program's newsletter, via SharePoint.
  • Review existing content to inform ideas for process innovations.
