About The Position

Ducks Unlimited, Inc., the world’s leading wetland and waterfowl conservation organization, is seeking qualified candidates for a Biologist in Kansas. The mission of Ducks Unlimited is to conserve, restore, and manage wetlands and associated habitats for North America’s waterfowl. These habitats also benefit other wildlife and people. This position is a collaborative partnership between Baker University, Ducks Unlimited (DU), and the Kansas Alliance for Wetlands and Streams (KAWS). The position will report to the KAWS-DU leadership.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Biology, Ecology, Natural Resource Conservation or Environmental Science is required.
  • Personnel management experience required.
  • Wetland management principles and experience required.
  • Working knowledge of common wetland plants and vertebrates of eastern Kansas.
  • Strong communication skills across diverse audiences including peers, partners, community leadership, and other professionals.
  • Ability to prepare and present technical information on conservation programs to peers and the public.
  • Ability to effectively communicate ecological concepts to both laypersons and professionals.
  • Ability to generate reports and educational materials.
  • Provide written and verbal communications in a courteous and cooperative manner to community leaders, Baker University, and partners.
  • Possess skill in interpersonal relationships.
  • Market, organize, and conduct public outreach programs to inform community leaders, Baker University, and partners of available programs and funding to address wetland maintenance issues.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Mapping/GIS software.
  • Familiarity and the ability to use social media outlets.
  • Ability to adapt and learn changing technology systems.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, terminology, and techniques of wetland science related to water quality and moist soil management; understand habitat management especially in wetland, prairie, and riparian habitats.
  • Ability to work effectively—both independently and as a member of a team.
  • Self-motivated and strongly driven to make a conservation impact in the Great Plains landscape.

Nice To Haves

  • MS in biological science, conservation, or wildlife management preferred, or a BS in biological sciences or related field with ≥5 years of relevant ecosystem management work, preferred.
  • Prescribed fire experience and training preferred.
  • Knowledge of state, federal, and local environmental laws and regulations preferred.

Responsibilities

  • To oversee the function, utilization, management and budget of Baker University Wetlands (BUW), Discovery Center, and the Wetlands’ staff.
  • Develop and implement the BUW Management Plan to meet the goals of BUW, DU, and KAWS.
  • Coordinate all research conducted at BUW.
  • Collaborate with, acknowledge the cultural importance of, and identify opportunities to include the Haskell Indian Nation University in BUW’s outreach and operations.
  • Represent the BUW, DU, and KAWS at conferences and workshops.
  • Form strong alliances with conservation and education stakeholders, community organizations, businesses, and area residents.
  • Manage BUW budget and oversee long-term management planning.
  • Fundraising and grant development in coordination with DU to supplement BUW management and wetland conservation measures and to support and further the mission and vision.
