About The Position

Ducks Unlimited, Inc., the world’s leading wetland and waterfowl conservation organization, is seeking qualified candidates for a Biologist in Kansas. The mission of Ducks Unlimited is to conserve, restore, and manage wetlands and associated habitats for North America’s waterfowl. These habitats also benefit other wildlife and people. This position will work with a team of biologists and engineers to deliver watershed projects in important migration habitat throughout the state of Kansas. The position will report to the Kansas Alliance for Wetlands and Streams leadership.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Agriculture, Biology, Ecology, Natural Resource Conservation or Environmental Science is required, or equivalent experience
  • Experience with Farm Bill conservation programs and implementation required
  • Knowledge of agricultural equipment, its uses, and its operational and maintenance needs
  • Agricultural private landowner outreach and project development experience
  • Knowledge of state, federal, and local environmental laws and regulations
  • Strong communication skills across diverse audiences including peers, partners, private landowners, and other professionals
  • Ability to prepare and present technical information on conservation programs to peers and the public
  • Possess skill in interpersonal relationships and supervisory experience
  • Ability to generate reports and educational materials
  • Market, organize, and conduct public outreach programs to inform watershed landowners and producers of available programs and funding to address water quality impairments and in-field resource concerns
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Mapping/GIS software
  • Familiarity and the ability to use social media outlets
  • Ability to adapt and learn changing technology systems
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, terminology, and techniques of agricultural science related to water quality, nutrient management, soil health, and soil conservation
  • Knowledge of regional agricultural practices, processes, and demands
  • Ability to work effectively—both independently and as a member of a team
  • Self-motivated and strongly driven to make a conservation impact in the Great Plains landscape

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Kansas Alliance for Wetlands and Streams (KAWS) by: Expanding the implementation of watershed-based programs and landowner engagement across eastern Kansas and within watersheds that cross political boundaries
  • Ensuring implementation of DU-held, NRCS-supported programs
  • Collaborating to develop the budgets, reporting, and operations of KAWS
  • Working closely with the KAWS and DU team members to support their complementary missions
  • Act as a part-time Watershed Coordinator for the Toronto-Fall River Watershed Restoration and Protection Strategy (WRAPS): Provide oversight for outreach to watershed stakeholders and residents regarding Watershed Restoration and Protection Strategy (WRAPS) projects.
  • Develop goal-driven outreach campaigns to engage producers and other stakeholders for improving soil health and water quality. Identify and enhance opportunities to implement and retain best management practices within the watershed.
  • Achieve annual best Management Practice (BMP)implementation goals as stated in the approved EPA 9 Element Watershed plan
  • Form strong alliances with local agency staff, stakeholders, community organizations, businesses, and watershed residents. Organize, lead, and manage WRAPS Stakeholder Leadership Team (SLT) meetings.
  • Assist with oversight of the John Redmond Conservation Technician ensuring that landowner goals are met in alignment with the program’s scope
