About The Position

Zymo Research is looking for a dynamic individual to join our Bioinformatics team as a Bioinformatics Intern! This is an exciting opportunity to explore the impact of cutting-edge methods, technologies, and applications in multi-omics analysis and pipeline building. In this role, you will be responsible for efficiently researching relevant topics, compiling data, developing bioinformatic pipelines, and communicating research findings. You will be mentored by a senior team member to support and effectively guide your contributions to research project objectives. The ideal candidate should be a self-motivated learner, an effective team player, and possess a strong interest in learning about molecular biology and experimental design. The successful candidate should also be detail-oriented and have experience in basic molecular biology laboratory techniques. If you are passionate about directly contributing to scientific advancement alongside industry veterans in a highly collaborative environment, we want you! This position is a part-time summer internship (maximum of 29 hours per week).

Requirements

  • Current enrollment in a Master’s or Bachelor’s program in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, or a related field.
  • Experience with one or more: DNA methylation analysis (WGBS/targeted BS, DMR/DML concepts), microbiome profiling tools, liquid biopsy or cell-free DNA (cfDNA) analysis.
  • NGS workflows: Understanding of standard NGS steps (demultiplexing, alignment, QC, variant calling) sufficient to design and maintain pipelines.
  • Experience with standard NGS toolkits (BWA/Bowtie2, SAMtools, BEDtools).
  • Programming: Proficiency in Python and shell scripting; ability to produce clean, testable code.
  • Workflow orchestration: Familiarity with Snakemake and/or Nextflow to build reproducible, automated pipelines.
  • HPC and cloud: Experience using Linux based high-performance computing (HPC) clusters and job schedulers (e.g., Slurm), with basic knowledge of AWS services (S3, EC2) for storage or scaling.
  • Containerization and reproducibility: Ability to work with Docker or Singularity for reproducible workflows.
  • Version control: Competence with Git and related CI/CD practices.
  • Research mindset: Capacity to read and interpret scientific literature and integrate findings into pipeline improvements.
  • Statistical analysis and machine learning: Knowledge of statistical methods and machine-learning techniques for analyzing high-dimensional omics datasets and building predictive models to support biomarker discovery and precision medicine.

Responsibilities

  • Support pipeline development for next-generation sequencing (NGS) data underpinning multi-omics analysis.
  • Assist in research-driven and proof-of-concept analyses.
