The BIM / SmartPlant Platform Administrator – CAE Support (IT) is responsible for the administration, configuration, and lifecycle management of Hexagon SmartPlant and related BIM/CAE platforms used across Sargent & Lundy’s engineering organization. The role ensures that SmartPlant tools are secure, available, performant, and aligned with project delivery requirements. This role partners closely with engineering disciplines, project teams, and IT infrastructure to maintain a reliable SmartPlant ecosystem, standardize content and data structures, and support digital design workflows. The position is hybrid, with regular onsite presence required in our Chicago, IL office.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5+ years of experience administering Hexagon SmartPlant tools in an engineering, EPC, or industrial facilities environment.
  • Experience working in a multi-discipline, project-driven engineering organization.
  • Hands-on administration experience with multiple components of the Hexagon SmartPlant suite, such as: SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI/INtools) SmartPlant P&ID (SPPID) SmartPlant Electrical (SPEL) Smart 3D (S3D) SmartPlant Foundation or other SmartPlant integration platforms
  • Strong understanding of: SmartPlant project structures, reference data, and catalog management Tagging structures, data relationships, and drawing/model management Multi-user, database-driven design environments
  • Familiarity with Windows Server, SQL Server/Oracle databases, networked storage, and license management in collaboration with IT infrastructure teams.
  • Understanding data management, backup/recovery, and environment refresh processes.
  • Strong customer service orientation and ability to communicate effectively with engineering users, project managers, and IT staff.
  • Proven ability to diagnose complex technical issues, prioritize work, and manage multiple tasks in parallel.
  • Structured, documentation-focused approach to configuration management and change control.
  • Collaborative working style, comfortable coordinating across IT, engineering disciplines, and vendor support teams

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with BIM/CAD tools (e.g., Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks, BIM 360 / ACC) and their interaction with SmartPlant is highly desirable.
  • Exposure to scripting and automation (SQL, PowerShell, Python, .NET, or SmartPlant APIs) is a plus.
  • Experience in power generation, transmission and distribution, utilities, or industrial process facilities.
  • Involvement in SmartPlant implementation, consolidation, or upgrade programs (e.g., multi-site rollouts, version upgrades, environment rationalization).
  • Experience with CDE/project collaboration platforms (e.g., ProjectWise, BIM 360 / ACC, SharePoint) and associated engineering document control processes.
  • Familiarity with ITIL/ITSM practices and use of enterprise ticketing systems for incident, request, and change management

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary administrator for the Hexagon SmartPlant tool stack, which may include SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI/INtools), SmartPlant P&ID (SPPID), SmartPlant Electrical (SPEL), Smart 3D (S3D), and associated SmartPlant Foundation or integration components.
  • Configure and maintain SmartPlant environments, projects, reference data, catalogs, symbol libraries, and standards in coordination with engineering and IT.
  • Administer related BIM/CAE platforms (e.g., Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks, BIM 360 / ACC) where they interface with SmartPlant or support multi-platform project delivery.
  • Manage user accounts, roles, permissions, and project access across SmartPlant and BIM platforms.
  • Oversee SmartPlant server environments (application servers, database servers, license servers) in partnership with IT infrastructure.
  • Monitor system performance, connectivity, and storage; proactively address bottlenecks, errors, and capacity issues.
  • Plan and coordinate software installations, patches, upgrades, and environment changes; execute regression testing to minimize disruptions to ongoing projects.
  • Implement and maintain backup, recovery, and environment refresh procedures for SmartPlant and dependent systems.
  • Act as the primary escalation point for SmartPlant-related incidents and requests from the help desk and project teams.
  • Troubleshoot application, configuration, data, and integration issues; coordinate with Hexagon support and other vendors as needed.
  • Analyze recurring issues and implement preventive measures, knowledge articles, and process adjustments to reduce incident volume.
  • Provide expert guidance on tool usage, workflows, and model/database management within SmartPlant and connected platforms.
  • Support the development, deployment, and enforcement of SmartPlant and BIM standards, including: Naming conventions, object and tag standards Project and plant structures Folder hierarchies, data partitioning, and security
  • Ensure that SmartPlant data structures support downstream use cases (engineering, procurement, construction, operations) and align with corporate data governance.
  • Maintain technical documentation for SmartPlant configurations, integrations, operating procedures, and administration playbooks.
  • Collaborate with CAE, IT, and data management teams to integrate SmartPlant with other enterprise systems, such as document management, BIM platforms, reporting/BI, and project controls.
  • Support or coordinate development and deployment of scripts, utilities, and customization (e.g., SQL, .NET, Python, PowerShell, SmartPlant APIs) to automate administrative tasks and improve user productivity.
  • Participate in tool and plugin evaluations, proof-of-concepts, and roadmap discussions for the SmartPlant and BIM ecosystem.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to streamline workflows, reduce manual data entry, and improve data quality.
  • Develop and deliver targeted training for SmartPlant users and support staff, including new-hire onboarding, role-based sessions, and refresher training.
  • Create and maintain user guides, FAQs, and job aids focused on SmartPlant workflows, standards, and common troubleshooting steps.
  • Promote consistent adoption of corporate standards and approved workflows across offices and disciplines.
  • Partner with engineering leadership and the CAE support team to capture feedback and incorporate it into tooling, standards, and roadmap priorities.
  • Work with IT security to ensure that SmartPlant and BIM environments comply with corporate security policies, client requirements, and data classification rules.
  • Implement and support access controls, audit trails, and segregation of duties in SmartPlant applications and databases.
  • Support audits and compliance checks related to engineering and plant design data, including evidence collection and remediation tracking.
