About The Position

The Department of Buildings and General Services (BGS) is seeking a skilled and dependable Maintenance Mechanic to join our team in Waterbury. This role is essential in keeping our facilities safe, functional, and welcoming for staff and the public. The Maintenance Mechanic will perform routine inspections to catch issues early, carry out preventive maintenance, and complete general building repairs. The position will also support seasonal tasks like snow removal, groundskeeping, and graffiti removal to keep our sites in top shape.

Requirements

  • Two (2) or more years of experience in building construction, structural maintenance, or building repair and maintenance.
  • A valid driver's license
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check
  • Technical knowledge of electrical, plumbing, general building maintenance, and the safe use of tools and equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a vocational/technical training program in building trades, mechanical repair, industrial arts, or a closely related field.
  • Strong problem-solver with the ability to troubleshoot effectively
  • Communicate clearly when collaborating with team members or reporting issues

Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine inspections of equipment and building systems to identify potential issues.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, including lubricating moving parts, changing HVAC filters/belts, replacing light bulbs and ceiling tiles, painting, and completing minor plumbing repairs.
  • Provide general groundskeeping services such as mowing, trimming, graffiti removal, and snow/ice removal.
  • Respond to building maintenance needs promptly and effectively.
