The Benefits Program Manager serves as a strategic contributor within the Total Rewards team, responsible for the design, development, and ownership of complex employee benefit programs. This role requires deep subject matter expertise, strong analytical capabilities, and the ability to lead cross-functional initiatives that align with organizational goals. The incumbent will act as a consultant and advisor to internal stakeholders, ensuring benefit programs are competitive, compliant, and effectively communicated.

Requirements

  • Degree or equivalent and typically requires 7+ years of relevant experience.
  • Typically requires 7+ years of progressive experience in benefits strategy, program design, and vendor management.
  • Strong knowledge of benefits regulations (ERISA, HIPAA, COBRA, FMLA, ADA, etc.).
  • Proven ability to lead complex projects and influence cross-functional teams.
  • Advanced analytical skills and proficiency in Excel.
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills; proficiency in PowerPoint required.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Program Design & Development Lead the design and implementation of innovative benefit programs that support McKesson’s overall Total Rewards strategy.
  • Drive continuous improvement by identifying opportunities for innovation and efficiency and recommend enhancements based on data-driven insights and employee feedback.
  • Own the full lifecycle of assigned benefit programs—from strategy and design through implementation, vendor management, and ongoing optimization.
  • Actively drive program success post-launch by monitoring performance, identifying improvement opportunities, and leading enhancements that elevate employee experience and business impact.
  • Stakeholder Engagement & Leadership Serve as a strategic advisor to internal stakeholders, including HR Business Partners, Legal, Procurement, and Communications.
  • Lead cross-functional teams and project initiatives to deliver benefit solutions that meet business needs.
  • Vendor & Partner Management Own the strategic and operational success of external benefit vendor relationships.
  • Drive accountability for performance, deliverables, and service excellence, ensuring alignment with program goals and employee experience standards.
  • Lead vendor selection, contract negotiations, and ongoing performance management, proactively identifying opportunities for improvement and innovation.
  • Oversee the integration of vendor platforms with internal systems (e.g., HRIS, payroll, enrollment system) including completion of required privacy and security assessments.
  • Data Analysis & Strategic Insights Analyze claims data, engagement trends, and market benchmarks to identify risks, opportunities, and inform strategic decisions.
  • Forecast future benefit needs and model financial impacts of program changes.
  • Compliance & Governance Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations (e.g., ERISA, HIPAA, COBRA, FMLA).
  • Conduct audits of benefit documentation and ensure timely updates to Summary Plan Descriptions (SPDs) and other compliance materials.
  • Ensure timely and accurate completion of required regulatory reporting, including validation of data integrity and coordination with internal and external stakeholders to meet compliance deadlines.
  • Communications & Change Management Support change management and employee communications related to vendor transitions or program updates.
  • Develop and execute strategic communication plans for benefit programs, including Annual Enrollment written materials, virtual and onsite meeting coordination.
  • Own the accuracy and relevance of program-related content across internal and external platforms (e.g., benefits websites, portals, communications).
  • Ensure timely updates by proactively reviewing materials and coordinating with external service vendors when changes fall outside internal capabilities.
  • Collaborate with partners to maintain consistent messaging and drive employee engagement.
  • Support Across Benefits Teams & Areas Support the integration of well-being initiatives into broader benefits strategy.
  • Collaborate with program leaders to align offerings with employee needs and organizational goals.
  • Partner with other Benefits team members, including Benefit Operations and vendor leads, to resolve escalated member issues and appeals.
  • Ensure timely, high-quality resolution and maintain alignment with program goals and service standards.
