About The Position

Indiana University Health in Indianapolis is seeking a dedicated and experienced Counselor (MS Senior Licensed) to provide comprehensive mental health services in a dynamic hospital setting, primarily focused on treating youth with suicidal thoughts and behaviors. This role offers opportunities for extensive training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS), with support for initial training and potential hybrid virtual work arrangements. Position Overview: The Counselor will: Conduct individual, group, and family counseling sessions, including co-leading evening groups periodically. Facilitate utilization review and discharge planning to ensure appropriate care transitions. Collaborate closely with healthcare teams, community agencies, law enforcement, schools, and families to provide resources, education, and support. Assess complex psychosocial needs, including evaluating prior functioning, support systems, reactions to illness, and coping abilities. Provide intervention and crisis management for youth with suicidal ideation and behaviors, as well as other clinical presentations. Participate in 24/7 phone coaching on a rotating basis (once set up). Support treatment planning involving guardianship, foster care, adoption, and mental health placements. Serve as a liaison with child and adult protective services (APS/CPS) and community agencies. Lead and supervise Bachelors and Masters level interns in practicum placements. Provide clinical supervision to license-eligible staff (LSW, LMHC-A, LMFT-A). Additional Responsibilities: Will be expected to participate in extensive training in DBT and CAMS, with initial support provided by the team. Contribute to a hybrid work environment, balancing in-person and virtual care as appropriate. Engage in treating a diverse caseload, primarily focusing on youth with suicidal thoughts and behaviors, with opportunities to handle general clinical cases.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or a related mental health field.
  • 5-7 years of relevant post-Master’s experience in healthcare, mental health, or community-based settings, with experience in crisis management preferred.
  • Current Indiana license as an LCSW, LMHC, LMFT, LCAC, or HSPP.
  • Crisis intervention certification (required within 90 days of hire).
  • BLS certification (required within 30 days of hire).
  • Proficiency in Evidence-Based Practices (CBT, MI, DBT).
  • Strong understanding of human behavior, mental health, and crisis intervention techniques.
  • Ability to de-escalate and manage high-risk situations effectively.
  • Knowledge of legal mandates related to child and adult protective services.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with multidisciplinary teams and community partners.
  • Proficiency with Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and MS Office Suite.
  • Ability to maintain a safe, therapeutic, and trauma-informed environment.

Nice To Haves

  • DBT or CAMS training is a plus but not mandatory; training will be provided.
