About The Position

Indiana University Health is seeking a compassionate and experienced Master's Degree Counselor to provide vital mental health services through a flexible, PRN schedule at Gateway Plaza. This role is integral to delivering comprehensive mental health assessments, crisis intervention, discharge planning, and protective services coordination. The Behavioral Health Counselor will: Facilitate patient involvement in treatment and educational activities Conduct individual, group, and family counseling sessions utilizing evidence-based practices (CBT, MI, DBT) Perform utilization reviews and assist with complex discharge planning to ensure safe, timely patient care transitions Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary healthcare teams to coordinate services and support Assess psychosocial risk factors, including prior functioning, support systems, and coping mechanisms Provide emotional, social, and financial counseling to patients and families Access and mobilize community and family resources to meet identified needs Conduct mental health assessments upon physician referral Support crisis intervention and de-escalation efforts in high-stress or potentially dangerous situations Serve as a liaison for child abuse/neglect, domestic violence, and protective services teams Intervene in guardianship, foster care, adoption, and placement processes as needed

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or related field from an accredited institution
  • 3-5 years of relevant healthcare, mental health, or community-based experience preferred
  • Current Indiana license in one of the following: LCSW, LMHC, LMFT, LCAC, or HSPP
  • Crisis intervention certification required within 90 days of hire
  • BLS certification required within 30 days of hire
  • Proven experience in healthcare, mental health, or community settings
  • Knowledge of disease impact and human behavioral responses
  • Familiarity with evidence-based practices (CBT, MI, DBT)
  • Understanding of legal mandates related to child and adult protective services
  • Strong grasp of growth, development, and end-of-life principles
  • Ability to create and maintain a safe, therapeutic environment
  • Proficiency with Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and MS Office applications
  • Excellent relationship-building skills with community agencies, law enforcement, schools, and healthcare providers
