About The Position

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) employs nearly 2,300 team members operating nine institutions statewide, which house approximately 5,800 inmates. The department's focus includes inmate programming and education, physical and behavioral health care, re-entry services, and community programs, and is accredited by the American Correctional Association (ACA). This position works as a member of Behavioral Health and is supervised by Substance Use staff. Primary duties are to ensure timely communication between inmates in Residential and Non-Residential Substance Use Treatment Services and Substance Use Unit Staff.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in criminal justice, behavioral science, human services or related field OR two years of experience working with persons referred through the legal system.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • No felony or domestic abuse related convictions.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license to occasionally transport inmates.
  • Transcripts required at time of appointment.
  • Background security checks completed on top candidates.
  • Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the following pre-employment exams in this order: medical exam, and at a randomly announced time pass a drug test.
  • Must successfully complete the fully paid Nebraska Corrections Training Program.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of corrections experience or experience working in the behavioral health field.

Responsibilities

  • Interacts with Residential Substance Unit (RSU) and/or Intensive Outpatient (IOP) inmates daily to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships.
  • Provides orientation of inmates to RSU and/or IOP.
  • Observes inmate activities, encourages engagement in pro-social behaviors, and documents behaviors for inmates participating in the RSU and/or IOP.
  • Provides continuous monitoring and evaluation of behavior and advises Substance Use staff and Multi-disciplinary Team (MDT) of trends and outcomes.
  • Works with patient's assigned Behavioral Health Practitioner in RSU to coordinate daily activities associated with substance use/mental health, to include recreation, group/individual therapy, psychiatric appointments, and other supervised activities as needed.
  • Observes inmates activities, being alert to possible security/health/safety problems and write corresponding reports/logs.
  • Provide crisis intervention to inmates.
  • Perform CPR and first aid.
