About The Position

Join the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) as a Behavioral Health Caseworker - Substance Use and play a key role in our mission to "Keep people safe" by promoting growth and rehabilitation. In this position, you will work directly with inmates in our substance use treatment programs at the Reception and Treatment Center, providing essential support, guidance, and crisis intervention. You'll be a vital part of the behavioral health team, helping to create a safe and therapeutic environment and assisting individuals on their journey to recovery. Requirements

  • Associate's degree in criminal justice, behavioral science, human services or related field OR two years of experience working with persons referred through the legal system.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • No felony or domestic abuse related convictions.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Transcripts required at time of appointment.
  • Applicants accepting a job offer must pass a medical exam, and at a randomly announced time, pass a drug test.
  • Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid NE Corrections Training Program.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of corrections experience and/or experience working in the mental health field.

Responsibilities

  • Works as a member of Behavioral Health and is supervised by Substance Use staff.
  • Provide direct support, encouragement, and crisis intervention to inmates in substance use treatment.
  • Observe and document inmate behavior, serving as a vital link between inmates and clinical staff.
  • Assist in orienting inmates to treatment programs and may manage a small caseload, facilitating non-clinical classes.
  • Maintain a secure environment by monitoring inmate activities, operating safety equipment, and responding to emergencies, including physical intervention.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training, and ensure all actions follow departmental policies and procedures.
