About The Position

Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health is seeking a Behavior Specialist to make a positive difference in the lives of children with developmental disabilities. This role involves working with dedicated professionals to help individuals in need. Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health New York provides programs and services for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and dual diagnoses. The position is located at their school in Red Hook, Dutchess County, NY. The Behavior Specialist will provide direction and mentorship to Education staff on behavioral strategies, maintain order and appropriate behavior among students, and ensure student attendance at activities. They will also counsel residents, serve as a role model, and provide crisis intervention as needed, assisting the program with projects assigned by the principal or designee. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • At least two years experience working with I/DD individuals in an educational or residential setting.
  • One of the two years of experience shall be in a crisis intervention-type position.
  • Free of dependency and abuse of illegal or illicit drugs, alcohol, inhalants or other chemical or controlled substances.
  • Significant, prolonged, and frequent amounts of walking, standing, sitting, stooping, bending, and lifting of 70 lbs. or more.
  • Must be able to singlehandedly effect the initial restraint of children and adolescents weighing between 75 and 150 lbs. using standard crisis intervention procedures.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • RBT Certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direction and mentorship to Education staff relative to behavioral strategies.
  • Maintain order and appropriate behavior by addressing students' actions and encouraging/reinforcing positive behavior.
  • Maintain knowledge of each residents' whereabouts to ensure attendance at activities.
  • Counsel residents as necessary.
  • Serve as a role model and reference person to students dealing with academic, personal, social, and vocational problems.
  • Provide crisis intervention as needed.
  • Assist the program and complete projects as assigned by the principal or designee.
