About The Position

Berkley Specialty Excess (BSE) was founded in 2023 as a member company of W.R. Berkley Corporation. Berkley Specialty Excess is an excess and surplus lines commercial insurance carrier, providing excess and surplus lines coverages for mid-market companies with hard–to place, specialized risks including, environmental (excess and primary), excess energy and excess general casualty. These risks involve moderate to high degrees of hazard and require highly negotiated terms to meet buyer's needs. The distribution of products is limited to industry specialized brokers, wholesale for all products and large retail brokers for environmental and energy products. The role of the AVP Underwriter is to provide superior business development and marketing strategies for their book of business, managing to produce and retain key accounts, and maintain an acceptable profit by keeping abreast of market trends. In addition, as a proven expert, the Executive Underwriter will also support the business as it pertains to participating in speaking engagements, networking opportunities, and industry forums as necessary.

Requirements

  • 10 + years of commercial insurance underwriting experience, preferably in E&S markets
  • Technical knowledge of general casualty lines of coverage
  • Experience with excess energy contractual wording, rating methodologies, financial analysis, and policy structure
  • Research and project management experience
  • Up to 25% travel
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent insurance experience required

  • Coursework toward applicable designation (including but not limited to CPCU, RPLU, etc.) desired

Responsibilities

  • Provide superior business development and marketing strategies for their book of business
  • Manage to produce and retain key accounts
  • Maintain an acceptable profit by keeping abreast of market trends
  • Support the business as it pertains to participating in speaking engagements, networking opportunities, and industry forums as necessary
  • Production and underwriting of new and renewal accounts
  • Compliance with underwriting documentation rules and guidelines
  • Maintain an acceptable underwriting profit
  • Adherence to Admiral underwriting guidelines and referral compliance
  • Development and maintenance of key broker/agent relationships
  • Participate in all internal company training and continuing education
  • Remain current on product releases as it pertains to LOB
  • Management and development of business and broker relationships new to the organization
  • Responsible for the overall management, business development, analysis and monitoring of their book of business
  • Stay abreast and knowledgeable on market trends in terms of forms, coverage and appetite to maintain competitiveness
  • Function as referral authority for Associate Underwriters and Underwriters
  • Leverage skills and expertise outside of desk responsibilities, including participation in marketing/public speaking events
