General Summary: The AVP Core Market Underwriting will manage the portfolio of a sales region meet the profit and growth objectives for Group LTD, Group Life, Group STD, and VWB. Additionally, the AVP Core Market Underwriting will achieve the following objectives: •Partner with sales management to achieve profit and growth objectives as approved in the regional plan and Corporate Operating Plan. •Develop a dynamic team of consultative underwriters proficient in providing customer focused delivery of Unum’s entire products portfolio. •Scope: All sales and inforce business for a region. Approximately $100M in sales and $500M of inforce business.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent business experience + substantial risk management expertise in either group or individual products.
  • Understanding of risk assessment principles and a complete understanding of the sales process.
  • Strong leader, mentor and developer of people.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast paced environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Keen customer service orientation.
  • Quick learner.
  • Strong collaboration/partnering and teamwork skills.

  • Ability to manage a portfolio as well as individual cases.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for development of a regional team focused on consultative underwriting and best in class risk assessment and management.
  • Achieve sales, pricing, quality, and renewal objectives.
  • Ensure integration of entire Unum portfolio in the sales and underwriting process.
  • Make appropriate risk management decisions consistent with the regional plan and Corporate Operating Plan.
  • Exhibit a superior understanding of market trends and conditions in assigned region developed by a close partnership with sales management.
  • Develop profit and growth plan in coordination with sales management.
  • Develop and manage inforce marketing programs in coordination with sales management that capitalize on opportunities within the assigned region.
  • Achieve superior level of personal credibility with sales management, customers, brokers and employees.
  • Exhibit decisiveness and creativity in all aspect of the management of portfolio.
  • Responsible for working with the Market Manager to develop key approaches to defeating locally strong competitors; Local Marketing Programs that meet the portfolio objectives; and segmentation programs to identify attractive business.
