About The Position

Academic tutors are needed to tutor AVID students during the AVID elective class for a minimum of 3 hours a day, two days a week. Individuals interested in becoming an AVID tutor must apply online at www.lsr7.org For additional information in the application process, interested candidates may call 816-986-1000. Tutors are required to attend 16 hours of facilitator training Trained tutors rate of pay, $18 per hour Purpose Statement: The job of AVID Tutor was established for the purpose/s of under the direct supervision of the Principal and AVID Coordinator, and with the assistance of the AVID elective teacher, providing tutoring and support and/or recommendations and support and tutoring for AVID students

Requirements

  • Skills are required to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.
  • Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: applying assessment instruments; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
  • Knowledge is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percent, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions.
  • Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: appropriate codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; age appropriate activities; lesson plan requirements; stages of child development; and behavioral management strategies.
  • Ability is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use job related equipment.
  • Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods.
  • Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize specific, job-related equipment.
  • Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans.
  • Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate.
  • Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: establishing and maintaining constructive relationships; adapting to changing work priorities; maintaining confidentiality; exhibiting tact and patience; and working flexible hours.
  • Job related experience is required.
  • Enrolled in or graduate of a technical college or university
  • College students must have a minimum 2.5 GPA, evidenced by college transcript, have a strong Math and English Language Arts background, evidenced by college transcript
  • College students must have a minimum of 30 college credit hours
  • Degree in mathematics, English language arts, or education
  • Complete the AVID Tutor Training Course and provide completion documentation to Human Resources
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance

Responsibilities

  • Participates actively in developing the academic and personal strengths of AVID students.
  • Serves as a role model/mentor to AVID students by being a lifelong learner, demonstrating appropriate academic and social behaviors, and wearing appropriate attire at all times.
  • Assesses from student’s notes and discussions, the concepts that need to be taught or retaught.
  • Evaluates student binders, including calendars, class and textbook notes, etc.
  • Researches a variety of materials (e.g. AVID Curriculum Libraries, textbooks and materials) for the purpose of assisting AVID students.
  • Conducts tutorial sessions in all areas of mathematics; therefore, a strong math background is mandatory.
  • Conducts mini-lessons in the process of writing in all subject areas, study skills, and other aspects of college preparation.
  • Sets examples of personal excellence and high expectations for AVID students to follow.
  • Works with students in any phase of the writing process, such as brainstorming, clustering, revision, and editing.
  • Communicates frequently and honestly with the AVID coordinator/teacher regarding student progress and areas of concern.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
