The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is looking for a Transportation Supervisor to assist and support Helicopter response for wildfire suppression. This position administers DNR's fuel support program, consisting of a class B fuel truck/trailer fleet, program vehicles, CDL Drivers and external use equipment used for aviation suppression.  DNR's fuel support program provides safe trained Class B CDL drivers to provide fuel and support to operational helicopters engaged in wildfire suppression. As a Transportation Supervisor, you will train drivers to provide and manage safe landing locations for helicopter refueling, operate safely around operational helicopters, complete and maintain required documentation, field repair and maintain external use suppression equipment and adhere to all DOT and agency rules of the road.  To be successful in this position you not only need an understanding of Commercial HAZMAT transportation, but also showcase outstanding supervisory and customer service skills. This position will consistently train personnel to represent the agency when speaking to landowners and general public, and have the ability to adapt to their audiences. Requirements

  • Experience with basic level computer applications such as Microsoft Office Suite, Power Point, Excel, Word, and Publisher.
  • Experience in development and maintenance of mapping and navigation equipment. (i.e. Ipads, Google Maps, GPS, Avenza).
  • Experience driving large trucks.
  • Experience applying personnel management principles and merit system rules, and employee union agreements.
  • Experience evaluating others' abilities and assessing training needs.
  • Knowledge of WADNR Aviation program.
  • Ability to develop and follow processes.

  • Field and Office: Position's assigned duty station is the Yakima Aviation Hangar. Work is performed in an office setting (50%) and in isolated unimproved natural areas within the state (50%). Incumbent must be able to traverse uneven terrain in all weather conditions. Often required to work long, irregular hours on workdays, weekends, day or night. These duties may involve fieldwork requiring limited physical performance. These duties include routine demand for activities in emergencies, under adverse environmental conditions, for extended periods.
  • Position requires travel (40%) to the field for project work, suppression preparedness, fires, supervision, attend meetings or various trainings. Frequent overnight travel is required for trainings, meetings, and fire assignments.
  • Pass work capacity test at the light level.
  • Forklift Operator, Current through fire season
  • Commercial Driver's license class B with HAZMAT, TANK, and AIRBRAKE endorsements, current through fire season.
  • WADOT Medical certificate, current through fire season.
  • TSA Background clearance to haul HAZMAT, current through fire season.
  • A current valid driver's license and two years of driving experience. Additionally, DNR requires state drivers to possess a license that is not suspended, revoked, or restricted (for example, Occupational/Restricted Driver Licenses or requiring ignition interlock devices). This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
  • Pre-employment CDL verification, work history background check and drug testing will be required as a condition of employment. This position may be subject to pre-employment, random and reasonable suspicion drug testing.

Nice To Haves

  • Five years of professional level experience managing or leading an emergency response/aviation group or program using the National Incident Management System (NIMS) or Incident Command System (ICS);
  • Experience with aviation FAA fueling operations, policies and procedures.
  • Experience in aircraft operations.

Responsibilities

  • Work with wildfire division aviation staff, providing recommendations for equipment replacement, plan training events and maintain effective communication to ensure clear expectations and coordination for successful deployment.
  • Engage with Helitack and Aviation Maintenance staff to ensure clear expectations, capabilities and coordination for aviation use throughout the state.
  • Maintain a direct line of communication with interagency partner and cooperators for successful current and future relations.
  • Must interact with others in and outside the agency in order to successfully accomplish the assigned duties.
  • Maintain & enhance our good working relationships with our federal and fire district cooperators. Maintains dialogue for planning, suppression, and risk management purposes with USFS and vendors. This position may interact with fire investigation program to help with cost recoveries for fires that could recover hundreds of thousands of dollars.
