About The Position

Under general supervision of the Supervisor II – Fleet Services, the Automotive Mechanic I/II/III performs inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of gasoline, diesel, hybrid, and electric-powered light vehicles to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the City’s fleet. This position performs preventative maintenance and repairs on automotive systems including engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical systems, driveline components, and air conditioning systems. Work also includes installing and maintaining vehicle accessories and equipment such as emergency lighting, push bumpers, seating systems, decals, and other specialized components used in City vehicles, including police units. Employees utilize diagnostic tools, shop equipment, and fleet maintenance software to document repairs, track maintenance activities, and maintain accurate service records. Positions in this series progress in responsibility and complexity, with higher levels performing advanced diagnostics, exercising greater independent judgment, and providing limited guidance to other staff.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of methods and procedures, tools, equipment, and materials used in the diagnosis, repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety standards for vehicles, equipment, and work areas.
  • Knowledge of safe driving principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of full range of automotive, diesel, and alternative fuel mechanics.
  • Skill to operate shop tooling and diagnostic equipment.
  • Skill to make safe, cost effective and reliable repairs to City vehicles.
  • Skill to use sound judgment when making repair decisions.
  • Skill to safely operate a variety of motor vehicles.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

  • A valid Texas Driver’s license; the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days, or a military waiver is required.
  • Completion of training courses leading to any of the Automotive Service Excellence Certification Tests or factory training directly related to City owned vehicles is required. (Automotive Mechanic II)
  • Completion of any of the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification Tests A1-A9 for light vehicle mechanics or a similar level of achievement in OEM (Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge or other OEM) coursework is required. (Automotive Mechanic III)
  • Considered Essential Personnel in the event of City Offices closure and reports to work as assigned by the Director.
  • Exposure to cold, heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, confining work space, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 18 months of related experience, such as quick lane-type experience with light mechanical work, is preferred. (Automotive Mechanic I)
  • Three (3) years of experience equivalent to that of an Automotive Mechanic I for the City of Abilene is required. (Automotive Mechanic II)
  • Five (5) years of experience equivalent to that of an Automotive Mechanic II or a full journey level Automotive Mechanic is required. (Automotive Mechanic III)

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, repair, and perform diagnostic checks and troubleshooting techniques on a variety of gasoline, diesel, hybrid and electric powered light vehicles.
  • Overhaul and/or repair components such as clutches, brakes, transmissions, transfer cases, differentials, universal joints, air conditioning and electrical systems.
  • Adjust and replace necessary units and parts including valves, pistons, brakes, hoses, body parts, switches, engine parts, and fuel and exhaust components.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance and repairs in Fleet Maintenance software.
  • Provide Parts staff with complete and accurate information when ordering repair parts.
  • Maintain personal and common work areas according to established safety standards.
  • Install or replace logos, decals, and placards as needed.
  • Outfit City vehicles, including police vehicles with accessory packages including seats, emergency lighting, push bumpers and other related equipment.
  • Operate a personal or city vehicle.
  • Perform other job related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
