About The Position

We are looking for a skilled and motivated Automation Technician to support the maintenance, troubleshooting, and operation of our laboratory automation systems. This role is critical in reducing downtime, optimizing performance, and ensuring smooth robotic operations. As an Automation Technician, you will work closely with automation engineers, scientists, IT, and external vendors to monitor, maintain, and improve automated liquid handling workstations and other robotic systems. Requirements

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field (or equivalent technical experience).
  • 1-3 years of hands-on experience in automation, robotics, or laboratory instrumentation.
  • Strong mechanical and troubleshooting skills for robotic systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and maintenance documentation.
  • Familiarity with electromechanical components, sensors, and actuators.
  • Knowledge of liquid handling principles and lab automation workflows.
  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and regulatory guidelines.
  • Strong documentation skills for troubleshooting reports, maintenance records, and compliance tracking.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities with a logical and analytical approach to troubleshooting.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently or in a team.
  • Effective communication skills to interact with engineers, scientists, and external vendors.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and develop technical expertise in lab automation.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced lab environment.
  • Comfortable working with hazardous chemicals and biological materials in compliance with safety regulations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with liquid handling systems (Hamilton, Tecan, Agilent, Beckman, etc.) is a plus.
  • Basic knowledge of automation software (e.g., VENUS, VWorks, Green Button Go, LabWare LIMS, or similar platforms) is preferred but not required.
  • Experience in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, clinical diagnostics, or life sciences is advantageous.
  • Basic programming experience (Python, C#, VB, or automation scripting) is a plus.
  • Experience with lab process validation (IQ/OQ/PQ) is an advantage.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine preventative maintenance on liquid handling platforms (e.g., Hamilton VANTAGE, Tecan EVO, etc).
  • Conduct system calibrations, verifications, and diagnostics to ensure optimal performance.
  • Monitor robotic system performance and proactively address issues before failures occur.
  • Manage instrument logs and maintenance schedules, ensuring compliance with industry best practices.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot robotic peripherals, sensors, and electromechanical components.
  • Diagnose and resolve automation errors, reducing system downtime and ensuring workflow continuity.
  • Conduct root cause analysis for persistent automation failures and recommend solutions.
  • Provide technical support to lab users, helping them operate and troubleshoot automated systems.
  • Collaborate with vendors and field service engineers to coordinate repairs, software updates, and hardware replacements.
  • Support the integration of new hardware and software features into existing automation systems.
  • Work with automation engineers to implement process improvements and increase system efficiency.
  • Document best practices and contribute to SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for system operations.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, suggesting and implementing optimizations for automation workflows.
  • Maintain accurate records of troubleshooting steps, maintenance logs, and performance reports.
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory quality standards, regulatory requirements, and safety protocols.
  • Assist in preparing documentation and equipment validation
  • Work closely with automation engineers, scientists, IT, and lab managers to ensure seamless lab automation operations.
  • Provide training and support to end-users, ensuring proper operation of liquid handling robots.
  • Learn automation programming and scripting techniques, with growth potential into engineering roles.
