The Automation Integration Engineer role involves transforming Target’s material handling automation systems into highly automated systems with robotics and transportation, designed for high redundancy and matrixed flow. Teams collaborate to ensure full-service technical solutions that meet operational needs, are sustainable, supported, flexible, and scalable. The collective team defines automation system technologies for Target facilities, supporting all automation-related activities including implementation, sustainability, and process integration. This role joins a team with high technical competency in automated material flow system integrations and implementations, working with internal and external technology partners to integrate middleware systems for flexible, scalable, and reliable automated systems, including simulation and emulation solutions. This Automation Intelligence and Integration Engineer will lead supply chain automation and robotic system architecture and engineering standards, supporting rollout across a large scale of Supply Chain facilities. The role drives alignment to standards and specifications in partnership with cross-team engineering teams, business stakeholders, vendor teams, UX designers, and data scientists, influencing quality delivery and rollout of design elements and architecture requirements to continuously improve facility performance by integrating technology seamlessly. Automation Intelligence and Controls Engineering teams at Target focus on analyzing, researching, designing, integrating, and delivering solutions that provide value to Target’s warehouses, while staying connected to future options and maintaining existing solutions. As an Engineer for Automation Intelligence and Integration, you will work in the design and engineering space across existing, new, and future automation solutions aligned with corporate strategies and business objectives. This role focuses on end-to-end material flow, partnering with data science, project, product, technology, and engineering teams to drive artifacts and engineering improvements for all Supply Chain automation solutions. Each Engineer is expected to view their solutions with a lens on continuous improvement, safety, security, and stability, ensuring a Long-Range Plan and overall business benefit. The role requires being an integration expert capable of extending and flexing across efforts to deliver based on standards, specifications, and industry-leading processes. Building strong partnerships within Target and the automation industry is crucial. Standard expectations include artifacts such as a Description of Operations, messaging specifications, software specifications, standards, and contracts. The role encourages open information exchange, inspires challenging goals, fosters urgency, leverages resources, and partners with teams to achieve goals.

Requirements

  • Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 6+ years of Engineering or Supply Chain experience
  • Industrial automation experience and expertise
  • Material handling industry standard artifact proficiency and experience (Examples: Automation KPIs, Description of Operations, software specifications, Controller ladder logic, messaging standards and alignment, ramp planning, design build process, etc.)
  • Ability to explain complex operational technology solutions in a simple way to align partners
  • Expertise with Warehouse Systems (WMS, WES, ASRS, WCS, SCADA, etc.) and complimentary solutions
  • User experience and customer focused with experience driving end state solutions for engineering personas
  • Understands automation and interaction with inventory systems in the market
  • Ability to drive vendor partners to specific requirements and hold them accountable for delivery and budget
  • Experience with data inputs and outputs of Emulation and Simulation of software and/or robotics solutions
  • Experience in building strategic long-range plans, in partnership with industry and engineer partners
  • Embraces and develops engineered solutions, interest in optimization of end-to-end process
  • Experience with technology and ability to facilitate communication between business and technology teams
  • Proven ability to lead a body of work with cross functional partners
  • Demonstrated ability to influence peers, key stakeholders and leaders
  • Experience in technical leadership roles – either field or within an IT or OT area
  • Strong communication skills – written and verbal
  • Ability to travel up to 25%

Responsibilities

  • Transform Target’s material handling automation systems to highly automated systems with robotics and transportation systems that are not tied to or require linear product flow
  • Ensure systems have high levels of redundancy and operate in a matrixed flow
  • Work closely with internal and external technology partners to integrate the middleware systems necessary to enable flexible, scalable, and reliable automated systems
  • Use simulation and emulation solutions with internal and external partners to lead direction and opportunities
  • Lead supply chain automation and robotic system architecture and engineering standards and support rollout across a large scale of Supply Chain facilities
  • Drive alignment to standards and specifications in partnership with cross-team engineering teams, business stakeholders, vendor teams, UX designers, and data scientists
  • Influence quality delivery and rollout of design elements and architecture requirements for automation solutions to continuously improve facility performance by integrating technology seamlessly
  • Work in the design and engineering space across existing, new and future automation solutions that align with overall corporate strategies and key business objectives
  • Focus on material flow end to end, in partnership with data science, project, product, technology and engineering teams to drive artifacts and engineering improvements for all Supply Chain automation solutions
  • View each owned solution with a lens on continuous improvement, safety, security and stability that gives the solution a Long-Range Plan and overall business benefit
  • Be the integration expert that can extend and flex across a particular effort to deliver based on standards, specifications and industry leading process
  • Build strong partnerships with other teams within Target and in the automation industry overall
  • Produce artifacts such as a Description of Operations, messaging specifications, software specifications, standards and contracts
