About The Position

The Automation Engineer is responsible for evaluating, recommending, and implementing automation equipment, suppliers, tools, and methods to support manufacturing operations. This role works closely with manufacturing facilities and associates to deliver effective automation solutions, while providing technical assistance related to equipment maintenance, operation, product quality, and production processes. The Automation Engineer applies continuous improvement principles to identify and resolve issues, reduce process variation, and improve equipment reliability. This position also collaborates with external partners such as contractors, equipment vendors, and supply vendors to support assigned projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or ten (10) to twelve (12) years of equivalent industry experience.
  • Four (4) to six (6) years of hands-on automation engineering experience.
  • Strong knowledge of three-phase electrical systems up to 480 VAC.
  • Solid understanding of PLC, HMI, and VFD programming and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with CNC and servo control systems; knowledge of Fanuc, Siemens, and Mitsubishi controls preferred.
  • Knowledge of automation systems including robotics, pick-and-place systems, and part transportation systems.
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic system design and troubleshooting.
  • Proficiency with computer systems and AutoCAD or similar drafting software.
  • Strong attention to safety with a thorough understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and NFPA 70E.
  • Ability and willingness to train, mentor, and work collaboratively with team members across departments.
  • Capability to safely operate equipment such as lift trucks and scissor lifts.
  • A pre-employment drug test and criminal background check are required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and coordination in the design, modification, adaptation, and installation of process automation equipment within manufacturing facilities.
  • Serve as a technical resource for issues related to equipment maintenance, operation, CNC systems, servo controls, and facility systems.
  • Provide technical support related to product quality and production processes.
  • Design, troubleshoot, and support PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, robotic systems, and automation controls.
  • Develop, support, and implement strategies addressing health, safety, and environmental requirements for automation systems, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and standards.
  • Support work teams through technical assistance and skills-based training related to automation, controls, and maintenance systems.
  • Coordinate and interact with external resources, including contractors, equipment vendors, and supply vendors, for assigned automation projects.
  • Work within established standards and procedures and contribute to the development of production, technical, safety, and environmental standards.
  • Lead, support, and participate in continuous improvement initiatives and team activities.
  • Identify and resolve problems using continuous improvement tools and problem-solving methodologies to improve reliability and reduce variation.
  • Perform general maintenance and facility support activities as needed, including building wiring, conduit installation, conductor sizing, and switchgear support.
  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, fostering cooperation and maintaining strong internal customer/supplier relationships.
