About The Position

Wegner CPAs is seeking an experienced auditor with a focus on employee benefit plan audits and ERISA compliance requirements. The ERISA Auditor will lead and execute high-quality benefit plan audits, support client relationships, and contribute to the continued growth of our assurance practice.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field (Master's preferred)
  • CPA license required (or active progress toward certification)
  • 3+ years of public accounting experience with a strong focus on ERISA/employee benefit plan audits
  • Proven experience leading ERISA engagements from planning through issuance
  • Strong understanding of GAAS, ERISA, DOL reporting requirements, and employee benefit plan audit standards
  • Experience with audit software and paperless workpaper systems
  • Ability to manage multiple engagements and deadlines, particularly during busy season
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and client service skills

Nice To Haves

  • 5+ years of employee benefit plan audit experience
  • Experience reviewing or preparing Form 5500 supplemental schedules
  • Familiarity with AICPA EBP Audit Quality Center best practices
  • Experience working directly with plan administrators, custodians, and third-party service providers
  • Strong attention to detail and audit documentation standards
  • Ability to identify and resolve audit issues independently
  • Strong project management and leadership abilities
  • Professional judgment and a client-first mindset
  • Collaborative team player with mentoring experience

Responsibilities

  • Plan, execute, and complete audits of employee benefit plans (401(k), 403(b), pension, health & welfare plans, ESOPs, etc.) in accordance with GAAS, DOL regulations, and ERISA requirements
  • Perform risk assessments, develop audit strategies, and prepare audit programs tailored to each engagement
  • Review and test plan eligibility, contributions, distributions, participant data, and compliance with plan documents
  • Evaluate internal controls and identify compliance gaps, reporting issues, and process improvement opportunities
  • Prepare and review financial statements, footnotes, and required supplemental schedules for Form 5500 filings
  • Ensure audit documentation meets firm and regulatory standards
  • Communicate audit progress, findings, and recommendations to clients clearly and professionally
  • Supervise and mentor staff accountants and seniors; review workpapers and provide training and coaching
  • Stay current on evolving ERISA, DOL, and AICPA guidance impacting benefit plan audits
  • Support firm initiatives including audit quality, process improvement, and client service excellence
