Description of Duties: (Will include but not limited to) Understands and follows all SOP's and Quality Assurance Standards Provides veterinary care consistent with state and federal law, as well as institutional practices, guidelines, and policies. Ensures compliance with all applicable regulations, guidelines, and policies to maintain AAALAC accreditation of the animal care and use facilities. Serves on multiple IACUC committees; attends IACUC meeting; assists with protocol development, prereview, and review. Provides regular and timely monitoring and evaluation of all animal species. Task to include recommending, directing and applying appropriate corrective measures to maintain colony health or in response to adverse complications resulting from unanticipated medical conditions or research manipulations. Directs the application of therapeutic treatment to include the initiation, administration, alteration, and termination of treatment regimens. Work closely with the Project/Program Manager and/or Facility Manager(s) and maintain a relationship with all staff. Follows and directs the application of all institutional preventive medicine, quarantine, conditioning, and isolation procedures. Assists in the development and application of animal health surveillance and environmental sanitation programs. Perform routine, emergency, and research related surgical manipulations and sample collections. Participates in animal study proposal review and procedure scheduling. Participate in new investigator orientation programs. Assists with staff training and skill evaluation. Participates in required training and continuing educational activities to maintain certification and licensure requirements. Communicates with various parties including SoBran staff, other Veterinarians, Investigative Staff, and other internal and external contacts. Provides scheduled and emergency after-hours veterinary care as required.

Requirements

  • A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (DVM/VMD) from an accredited program. If degree not attained in the U.S., a certificate (ECFVG or similar) of equivalent training accepted by the American Veterinary Medical Association is required.
  • Completion of an accredited training program in Laboratory Animal Medicine; or a minimum of 6 years equivalent experience; American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) Board certified preferred
  • Candidate must hold a valid license to practice veterinary medicine in Maryland or reciprocal state within the U.S
  • 3-6 years of experience as a Clinical Veterinarian in the Laboratory Animal field working with multiple species including non-human primates, swine, and rodents.
  • Must be able to lift a maximum of 50 lbs., bend, push, pull, stoop, climb, and stand for a prolonged period.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned.
  • Able to participate in weekend and holiday veterinary care assignments and duty rotations.
  • Willing to travel when needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Candidate preferred to hold a current Diplomate certification in the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine; or be eligible to sit for and successfully complete the board examination within 2 years of appointment to the position.
