About The Position

Athletic Program Coordinators in the Merit System are responsible for coordinating and overseeing activities related to running a variety of city-wide sports and recreational programs. Individuals in this position will work closely with coaches, athletes, parents, sports officials, and subordinate staff to ensure that sports and recreational programs run effectively, and in compliance with established rules and regulations. Additional responsibilities include coordinating/scheduling the use of equipment and city owned facilities, overseeing the maintenance of city athletic facilities, supervising and directing subordinates in their job duties, monitoring budgets, and maintaining documentation and reports related to departmental activities. The work performed by Athletic Program Coordinators requires an individual with excellent organizational skills, interpersonal skills, and a strong background in sports administration and/or coaching.

Requirements

  • Option A: Possession of a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Recreation Administration, Physical Education, Health and Recreation, Leisure Services, or other closely related recreation degree.
  • Experience working as a lead worker assisting to train, schedule and plan activities for fellow employees, volunteers, or other support staff.
  • Experience developing and monitoring operational budget for department and/or program.
  • Driver’s license.
  • Option B: Paid work experience working at an administrative level developing, organizing and administering organized league programs involving various athletic sports (e.g., softball, baseball, soccer, tennis, basketball) to include facility operations, planning and monitoring programs.
  • Experience working as a lead worker assisting to train, schedule and plan activities for fellow employees, volunteers, or other support staff.
  • Experience developing and monitoring operational budget for department and/or program.
  • Driver’s license.

Nice To Haves

  • CPR, First Aid, and/or AED Certification.
  • CPO (Certified Pool Operator) Certification or AFO (Aquatic Facility Operator) Certification.
  • Experience maintaining pools.

Responsibilities

  • Organizes and oversees sports and recreational programs for city-wide athletic events and activities including softball, basketball, tennis, soccer and other sports by coordinating registration, ordering supplies and equipment, collecting fees, ensuring appropriate league management and coordination, and promoting events hosted by the jurisdiction.
  • Coordinates and oversees the use and maintenance of city athletic facilities and equipment (e.g., fields, gymnasiums, swimming pools) for city-sponsored and/or private sports organization and club events by prepping and maintaining needed inventory and equipment, inspecting facilities for use, identifying and correcting facility issues, and ensuring rules are followed and enforced.
  • Performs administrative duties such as maintaining records, submitting reports, developing specifications and ordering equipment, and maintaining line items and other budgeting tasks to ensure recreation programs are equipped to meet the needs of participants.
  • Supervises staff by assigning and distributing work, directing staff in their job duties, monitoring progress of work, providing feedback and/or training.
  • Monitors participant compliance with all established rules, regulations, policies, and/or contractual obligations related to city athletic events, programs and/or facilities.
  • Acts as liaison for the city recreation department to internal and external individuals/organizations to provide assistance and guidance with activities related to sports and recreational programs.
  • Develops policies and procedures for recreation activities, events, programs, etc. in order to establish guidelines.
