About The Position

The Athletic Director provides vision, leadership, and strategic management for all interscholastic athletic programs within Cranston Public Schools. This role is responsible for the evaluation of coaching staff, financial oversight of the athletic department, and ensuring a safe, equitable, and compliant environment for student-athletes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree in Athletic Administration, Education Administration, or Sports Management preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in managing Rhode Island Interscholastic League (RIIL) and RIPCOA school programs or teams.
  • Previous successful coaching experience at the high school level in Rhode Island.
  • Expertise in RIIL Constitution, Rules and Regulations, and NFHS guidelines.
  • Strong evidence of financial management and budgeting skills.
  • Comprehensive understanding of Title IX compliance and equity in athletics.
  • Familiarity with Cranston Public Schools policies, specifically Student and Coaches Handbooks.
  • Current certification in First Aid/CPR/AED.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and postseason events.

  • NIAAA certification (CMAA or CAA) preferred (or willingness to obtain).

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership for the continued evaluation, development, and improvement of the interscholastic program.
  • Recruit, recommend, supervise, and evaluate all coaches and support staff in coordination with building principals.
  • Coordinate with the Middle School AD/Physical Education Program Supervisor; supervise and evaluate same.
  • Provide ongoing professional development for coaches, emphasizing sportsmanship, equity, and RIIL compliance.
  • Chair the district’s Athletic Advisory Committee and coordinate the Cranston Athletic Hall of Fame and athletic awards.
  • Coordinate all athletic schedules, including games, practices, officials, facilities, and transportation (Grades 9-12).
  • Ensure proper administration and security for all home athletic contests, including trainers, officials, gate personnel, and medical/ambulance services.
  • Maintain mandatory presence at athletic events during regular and postseason contests.
  • Review and update the Coaches’ and Students’ Handbooks annually for School Committee approval.
  • Prepare, submit, and administer the annual athletic budget, including bids for supplies and equipment.
  • Manage the care, maintenance, storage, inventory, and reconditioning of all athletic equipment and uniforms.
  • Submit annual financial and participation data (receipts, expenditures, and student data) as required.
  • Certify student eligibility per CPS and RIIL guidelines; maintain all varsity eligibility lists, parent permissions, medical forms, and insurance documents.
  • Ensure absolute adherence to Title IX mandated reporting and compliance requirements.
  • Maintain effective communication with principals, coaches, students, parents, and the community.
  • Serve as the official district representative at local, district, or state meetings (RIIL) regarding athletic policy and tournaments.
  • Coordinate with team coaches for community service opportunities for student-athletes.
  • Perform any other responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent or designee.
