About The Position

The Assistant Superintendent Mechanical is responsible for assisting the Mechanical Superintendent and Sr. Director with the overall contract and operations management of Amtrak's Northeast locations. The position supports the Superintendent and Sr. Director in achieving operations, service, financial and business goals for the commuter operation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience.
  • Plus 7 years of relevant work experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of railway and rail transit rolling stock to include extensive servicing, repair and maintenance program experience
  • Demonstrated leadership experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience related to safety program methodology and its application
  • Some experience in budget and financial control; contract management
  • Demonstrated mechanical expertise with a track record of supervisory experience, showcasing innovative leadership and management skills
  • Strong communication skills both orally and in writing, internally and externally
  • Comprehensive knowledge of machinery/rolling stock in transportation, including servicing, warranty, repair, and maintenance programs
  • Experience in managing customer service environments and applying safety program methodologies
  • Proficiency in project and inventory management, technical supervision, planning, scheduling, budget control, contract management, and process management
  • Effective decision-making, organizational, and problem-solving abilities
  • Familiarity with railway engineering regulatory requirements (AAR, AREMA, FTA, FDA, FRA)
  • Ability to identify opportunities for change to address recurring issues
  • Proficiency in PC skills including word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills for effective presentations and administration.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of domestic and international railway engineering regulatory requirements

Responsibilities

  • Assists the Superintendent with the day-to-day management of all facets of the operation including leadership,direction and coordination of commuter operations, train and terminal operations, terminal servicing, station operations, environmental, safety, rules compliance and financial control
  • Coordinates inspection and mechanical service activities with commuter, regional, and state organizations as appropriate
  • Serves as a liaison for the Superintendent and/or Sr. Director to coordinate with, support and provide information to agency executive and management staff, city/county staff and officials, outside agencies, consultants, vendors and special interest groups
  • Directs the strict implementation of maintenance alerts, FRA and FDA regulatory requirements, supplier maintenance instructions and SMP's for the Amtrak/Commuter operation
  • Implements inspection and servicing process improvements as appropriate to support geographical areas
  • Implements inspection and mechanical service related safety plans and programs
  • Assists and participates with cross-functional teams, including process focus teams, to ensure proper management and control of project schedules, financials, and resources
  • Assists and participates in the implementation of goals and objectives required to safely and efficiently complete inspection and mechanical service programs and projects within scope, schedule, and budget
  • Monitors the status of materials procurement and ensures proper materials installation
  • Monitors productivity to ensure efficient resource utilization and makes adjustments and procedural changes as required
