About The Position

The position of Assistant Cross Country/Track & Field Coach will hold a 100% appointment in the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse Department of Intercollegiate Athletics (“the Department”) and will report directly to UWL’s Head Cross Country Coach. The Assistant Coach will assist in the management of daily operations of a Division III intercollegiate men’s and women’s cross country/track & field program competing in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, with responsibilities including, but not limited to, assisting in the planning, recruiting, coaching, developing, implementing, and administering of the cross country and track & field program to meet university and Department objectives. They will also be responsible for various administrative tasks associated with running an intercollegiate cross country/track & field program, potentially including, but not limited to, the planning of team travel; managing equipment and/or video and technology needs; managing social media accounts; and coordinating camps. The Assistant Coach must conduct themselves in such a way as to enhance respect for the university, the Department, UWL Cross Country/Track & field programs and UWL student-athletes. Must be able to lift and move equipment as needed. Must be able to walk and stand for prolonged periods of time. Adhere to all rules of the NCAA, WIAC, and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Evening and weekend hours are required. Travel for recruitment activities is required. The ability to have and maintain a valid driver’s license meeting the criteria for driving a vehicle on University/State business is required. Driver Authorization required upon hire. Attendance at athletics department meetings, appropriate WIAC and/or NCAA meetings or job-related clinics and conferences required as needed. The review of applications starts on February 23, 2026. Applications received on or before February 23rd are prioritized and review will continue until the position(s) is/are filled. Initial interviews will be conducted virtually, with shortlisted candidates invited to campus.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or relevant professional experience may be substituted on a year for year basis in lieu of a bachelor’s degree.
  • Coaching and/or participation in the sports of cross country and/or track & field (distance events).
  • Knowledge and/or experience of recruiting and coaching the endurance events.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Plan and direct the development of student-athletes in the skills and knowledge for successful competition in the sport of cross country and track & field.
  • Communicate and execute the head coach’s vision of leadership and family through various activities including, but not limited to, educational sessions, team building activities, and campus/community service.
  • Assist the Head Cross Country Coach in the development and implementation of endurance training.
  • Oversee production of social media content.
  • Demonstrate positive sportsmanship by refraining from publicly criticizing student-athletes, university support staff, officials, or opponents.
  • Assist in developing and sustaining a competitive program through, in part, the recruitment of quality student-athletes.
  • Assist in all aspects of endurance athlete recruitment (collection of recruitment data, initial contact, campus visits, off-campus evaluations, etc).
  • Assist in planning, organizing, and implementing recruiting activities within rules set by the NCAA , WIAC , and UWL
  • Advance the university’s efforts to increase campus diversity by recruiting diverse prospective student-athletes.
  • Develop and continually maintain recruiting records and logs.
  • Adhere to all rules of the NCAA , WIAC , and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
  • Implement team rules and policies developed by the Head Coach.
  • Assist the Head Coach in the development of in- and off-season programs as permitted by applicable NCAA Bylaws and regulations.
  • Promote a team culture devoted to academic achievement and ensure an atmosphere supportive of, and conducive to, academic success
  • Assist the Head Cross Country Coach with monitoring the academic progress of student-athletes in the distance program to ensure that regular, ongoing, and necessary progress is made toward the attainment of a UWL degree.
  • Adhere to all athletic training policies and procedures.
  • Assist, as needed, the Head Cross Country Coach on planning all aspects of team travel.
  • Attend appropriate WIAC and/or NCAA meetings.
  • Attend job-related clinics and conferences.
