About The Position

The Office of the Attorney General is seeking a full-time Attorney to serve in the Criminal Division, headquartered in Augusta. The primary responsibilities of this position include advising bureaus within the Dept of Public Safety, including the Maine State Police (weapons unit; licensing of polygraph, professional investigators, contract security companies), Office of the Fire Marshal, State Bureau of Identification, and Sex Offender Registry. Advice to agencies includes a variety of issues, often related to criminal history records, confidentiality laws, and rule-making. The position provides back-up for post-NCR petitions in homicide cases. Litigation duties include criminal, civil and appellate work. AAGs are expected to participate in appellate moots for other attorneys and representation of the Attorney General on various groups, consistent with their expertise. This is not an entry-level position.

Requirements

  • Applicants should have strong legal research and writing skills
  • The ability to analyze and draft legislation
  • A demonstrated facility to function effectively as part of a team, including the ability to apply knowledge of substantive criminal law in the context of civil litigation

Nice To Haves

  • Five or more years of legal practice with demonstrated proficiency in criminal law, including appellate work
  • Familiarity with firearms law and administrative procedures is preferred
