About The Position

The Associate Vice President (AVP) of Business Unit (BU) Business Development and Strategy reports directly to the BU President and is a core member of the Agilent CrossLab Group Executive Leadership Team. This role partners with the Strategy and Corporate Development (SCD) staff on M&A pipeline health, Long Range Plan (LRP) and enterprise strategy delivery, and deal execution. Agilent CrossLab Group integrates services, consumables, and lab-wide resource management to enhance laboratory efficiency, optimize operations, increase instrument uptime, and develop user skills. The AVP BU Business Development leverages strong business acumen, strategic thinking, domain knowledge, and industry contacts to advance inorganic growth strategies, serving as a key architect of the company’s external growth engine. Responsibilities include identifying, evaluating, and executing strategic opportunities such as M&A, joint ventures, and high-impact commercial partnerships to expand market share and technical capabilities. Additionally, the AVP contributes to Agilent's long-range enterprise strategy and leads strategic initiatives with a focus on inorganic growth and profitability.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated strategic ability and experience in creating and executing multi-year strategic plans at the company, group, or business unit level.
  • Expertise in forming inorganic growth strategies that support business goals, including the identification, cultivation, and strategic rationale development for M&A targets.
  • Experience in conducting adjacency analyses in collaboration with stakeholders to explore non-core inorganic opportunities.
  • Proven capacity to engage, influence, and earn the trust of senior executives and peers at the executive level.
  • Relevant understanding of platforms, technologies/science, and market dynamics pertinent to the business.
  • Ability to identify, negotiate, and close business development and strategic collaboration opportunities, such as partnerships, licensing, and acquisitions, in close collaboration with Agilent partners.
  • MBA or technical degree relevant to life sciences.
  • At least 10 years of experience in business development, corporate development, strategic marketing, market analysis, strategy, business consulting, or related roles, including increasing management responsibilities.
  • Proven track record of results driven by interpersonal and relationship-building skills, particularly in leading multicultural and geographically dispersed teams within a fast-paced, matrixed environment.

Responsibilities

  • Build and manage the M&A funnel, guiding priority targets through the entire M&A lifecycle for the specified business unit.
  • Conduct thorough market analysis and stay updated on industry trends to identify potential areas for growth and investment, maintaining a "living" pipeline of targets that align with the long-term vision.
  • Facilitate the active engagement and cultivation of high-priority M&A targets.
  • Partner with Business Unit Leadership and SCD BD leadership to design investment theses and define the main strategic assumptions for all inorganic investments, leading strategic diligence efforts for these opportunities.
  • Act as a core member advising and aligning the Business Unit general managers, group president, and SCD staff on inorganic opportunities.
  • Identify, analyze, recommend, and lead acquisition and investment actions that align with business and enterprise-level strategies by leveraging data, market knowledge, and competitive insights to establish priorities and manage tradeoffs.
  • Serve as the M&A lead for the designated Business Unit.
  • Maintain close partnership with SCD Corporate Development for transaction management, diligence, and negotiations.
  • Collaborate with business and integration teams on post-close planning to ensure realization of M&A business cases.
  • Support the SCD Strategic Program Office in strategy development and achievement of enterprise objectives, focusing on inorganic and long-term growth and understanding key drivers of shareholder value and relevant business models.
  • Partner with Business Unit leadership and SCD teams, bringing strong financial and analytical acumen to the table.
  • Demonstrate personal credibility by offering perspective, counsel, and insight, maintaining integrity, and fostering productive collaborations both internally and externally.
  • Monitor and maintain awareness of competitive dynamics, market conditions, and emerging trends.
  • Manage the Business Unit-level pipeline, ensuring its robustness and completeness.
  • Identify, source, and screen new opportunities, creating and executing cultivation plans in partnership with group finance and the president to develop a comprehensive investment thesis.
