About The Position

The Brown Bag Bus of the YMCA of Greater Louisville is a one-of-a-kind initiative to combat the effects of childhood hunger in Louisville, KY. Brown Bag Bus staff will help provide food assistance to children within food deserts in underserved communities. The CDL Driver safely operates the Brown Bag Bus and supports mobile meal service execution across assigned community stops. This role is responsible for vehicle readiness, safe driving, route adherence, bus security, fueling, and coordination with on-board staff to ensure meals, equipment, and records arrive on time and in compliance with program requirements. The CDL Driver helps create a dependable, safe, and welcoming experience for children, youth, volunteers, and community partners while protecting the vehicle and upholding Summer Food Service Program expectations.

Requirements

  • Experience working with youth, meal distribution, cashiering, service tracking, camps, afterschool, outreach, recreation, or similar public-facing service environments preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy under time pressure, with the ability to follow counting procedures exactly and complete logs clearly and consistently.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to connect positively with children, teens, caregivers, volunteers, and staff from varied backgrounds.
  • Basic understanding of food safety, hand hygiene, sanitation, and child-safe engagement practices preferred.
  • Comfort facilitating simple games, conversation prompts, or structured enrichment activities while maintaining awareness of service flow and surroundings.
  • Ability to follow direction, work as part of a mobile team, and adapt to changing stop conditions throughout the day.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift or move meal service or activity supplies as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Welcome children, youth, and families to each stop and help create a positive, inclusive, and respectful service environment.
  • Conduct or assist with accurate point-of-service meal counts using approved logs or tools and follow all counting procedures established by the program.
  • Support orderly participant flow around the bus and service area so meals are distributed efficiently and counts remain accurate during busy periods.
  • Help set up the service area with required signage, hand hygiene materials, meal service supplies, counting tools, and enrichment materials.
  • Help deliver or facilitate the required enrichment activity at each site using materials and plans established by the program.
  • Engage youth in age-appropriate conversation, games, reading, or simple structured activities that support a strong participant experience.
  • Monitor meal handling practices to support food safety, sanitation, and quality standards during transport, setup, and service.
  • Communicate inventory concerns, shortages, safety issues, participant conflict, injuries, or community concerns to the Site Lead promptly.
  • Support setup, replenishment, cleanup, and basic volunteer coordination so service remains organized from stop to stop.
  • Represent the Brown Bag Bus with professionalism and help build trust with returning participants, families, and community partners.
  • Engagement and compliance scope: supports the required enrichment component at every site visit while protecting accurate route-level meal counts and service records.
  • Service environment: works from a mobile meal platform with repeated setup and breakdown across clustered community stops.
  • Coordination: partners closely with the Site Lead and Driver to keep service timing, participant experience, and inventory aligned throughout the route
  • Must be available Monday-Friday for route service, training, readiness activities, enrichment support, and occasional community events or familiarization activities as assigned.
