Learn more at https://www.jnj.com/innovative-medicine We are searching for the best talent for Associate Scientist, Pharmaceutical Product R&D. The successful candidate will work in the Cell & Gene Therapies (CGT) Department. The incumbent will perform experiments independently to support wash, formulation, fill, cryopreservation development for cellular therapies. Formulation studies will include initial formulation selection plus a variety of characterization studies relevant to the stage of development. Process development studies will include determination and characterization of process parameters associated with fill-finish operations such as washing, filtration, fill speeds, and controlled rate freezing. The candidate will collect, record, and interpret data appropriately and may present data at internal meetings. In particular, design and execution of appropriate studies, and efficient reporting of the associated data, will be an important function of this job. The candidate may eventually train other personnel on techniques and equipment. They will keep electronic lab notebooks, write technical memos with minimal review and keep abreast of scientific developments in various fields. New concepts learned in this way will be introduced into the workflow. Sound analytical knowledge and experience is required. The candidate should be proficient in a variety of methods relevant to cell therapy such as cell culture, cell counting techniques, and have an understanding of basic immunology. A strong understanding and experience in the application of various GXP concepts is preferred. Experience with operating larger cell instruments (e.g. Prodigy) is preferred. Experience with design of experiment (DOE) study design and controlled rate freezing is a plus. Independent Decision Making Consolidates and interprets data, contributing to the evaluation and modification of scientific objectives. Initiative Identifies and initiates corrective actions for experiments. Collaboration/ Communication Sends clear, effective communication through presentations and reports. Builds network within the department and other areas of the company.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a B.S./B.A. with 2 years of experience, performing progressively advanced duties at the Associate Scientist I level, or the equivalent training/experience is required. Master's Degree with 1 year of experience is preferred.
  • Attends in-house seminars and local/regional scientific meetings in own field is required
  • Presents own work to members of department or external consultants as required
  • Basic immunology background is required
  • Experience with sterile technique is required
  • Experience with cell culture is required
  • Experience with freezing cells is required
  • Experience with assessing post thaw is required
  • Experience with cell counting techniques is required
  • Experience with basic statistical analysis is required
  • Experience with data graphical presentation is required, prism experience preferred
  • Experience with maintaining a lab notebook is required, electronic preferred

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with large cell-based instruments (e.g. Prodigy, Cue, Thermo Fisher CRF, etc.) is preferred
  • Experience with design of experiments (DOE) design is preferred
  • A strong understanding and experience in the application of various GXP concepts is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conceptualization/Creation Ideation and Execution Performs assigned scientific experiments with decreasing level of supervisor‘s assistance.
  • Provides input and identifies problems with scientific experiments, analyses/tasks in related areas.
  • Operations Management Maintains current laboratory equipment and operates analytical and other instruments.
  • Assists in developing recommendations for improving standard procedures
  • Information Management and Communication Maintains accurate record keeping and experimental data with the use of statistical packages and standard databases
  • Draft technical reports and contribute to information management, manuscripts, patent applications, etc.
  • Project Management Communicate results to supervisor in an efficient and timely manner
  • Supports the work of project members to accomplish team objectives on time and within budget
  • May place orders in purchasing systems or maintain supplies to proactively support projects
  • Supports collaborative cross functional departmental studies
