GoogleWashington D.C., DC

About The Position

We are looking for a talented lawyer to become an Associate Product Counsel in our Display and YouTube Ads Legal team. At Google, product counsel are the lawyers who work directly with the teams that design, build, and operate the company’s products. They act as a bridge between legal requirements and innovation, helping the company avoid costly mistakes while building products that are safe, effective, and lawful. Product counsel understands the functionality of, and the technology incorporated in, the products they cover, as well as the business goals. They identify the legal risks, strategize on pragmatic ways to limit the risks, and convey their advice to product leadership, engineers, and business executives. In doing so, they will regularly collaborate with others, such as commercial counsel, legal specialists in privacy, competition, or intellectual property law, trust and safety teams, litigators, and public policy experts.

Requirements

  • JD, LL.B., equivalent degree, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3 years of relevant attorney work experience in product, intellectual property, privacy, antitrust, regulatory or commercial law.
  • Admitted to the bar and in good standing or otherwise authorized to practice law (e.g., have registered in-house status) in the state in which the position is located.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in the technology sector or digital advertising.
  • Deep understanding of one or more major international regulations affecting online platforms and advertising (e.g., GDPR, CCPA, DMA, DSA, COPPA, or AI legislation).
  • Understanding of complex and emerging technologies and products, and for "talking shop" with product, engineering, and business teams.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex issues with clarity in writing and in meetings.
  • Excellent collaboration skills.

Responsibilities

  • Act as lead product counsel for new and existing Display Ads products, features, and policies, providing legal advice to product management, engineering, Sales, UX, PR/Comms, and other cross-functional teams.
  • Advise product and engineering teams on high-stakes global regulations across privacy, competition, content, and kids regulations, including GDPR and US State privacy laws, DMA, DSA, AIA, and evolving AdTech regulations.
  • Develop and maintain legal strategy for advertising practices related to user data, ads personalization, and evolving consent and transparency frameworks, ensuring adherence to Google policies and privacy controls.
  • Develop and maintain legal strategy for complex competition inquiries and restrictions, including partnering with litigation and regulatory legal teams to support global antitrust cases involving Google’s Ads businesses.
  • Partner with others across our Global Affairs team to prepare responses and defenses for regulatory inquiries and legal challenges.
