Requirements

  • Ability to work in an-conditioned office environment for approximately 8 hours.
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment for approximately 8 hours.
  • Ability to sit and/or stand as necessary to perform essential functions
  • Associate’s degree in mechanical engineering or industrial engineering
  • Minimum of three years of experience in a production environment
  • Department or manager may waive degree requirements if a candidate’s work experience is equivalent to the educational and job history requirements

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the creation, documentation, and revision of manufacturing tooling drawings and machine layouts. This responsibility includes assigning tooling part numbers, reviewing submitted process problem forms, and creating new drawings for special parts with minimal supervision.
  • Designs required tooling and initiates the acquisition of that tooling. Works closely with the assigned manufacturing area, Application/Process Engineering, Company Tool Room, and Quality personnel during prototype production.
  • Makes process adjustments and/or tooling changes as required to produce a part acceptable to Application/Process Engineering and Quality Assurance Departments. Documents process and tooling in accordance with established company procedures.
  • Responsible for the creation and maintenance of Product Masters, Routers, and Product Structures for the product to be manufactured.
  • Stays informed regarding new industry developments in order to serve as an informed consultant to management regarding the positive direction of process changes, equipment purchases, and plant expansions.
  • Keeps all Tooling and Layout documentation current
  • Responsible for performing drawing revisions and documenting them with Engineering Change Notices, along with Router and Product Structure revisions.
  • Is responsible for assigning tooling part numbers and controlling the issuing of them.
  • Is responsible for reviewing revisions to existing tools suggested by manufacturing personnel (process problem forms). Sees that acceptable suggestions are implemented and explains why some are rejected.
  • Is responsible for creating required tool drawings and layouts for special (Y#) parts when they are ordered for the first time. This must always be done in a timely manner, meeting all established deadlines.
  • Is responsible for revisions to tooling drawings, which may be required as a result of revisions to standard part dimensions. This includes the creation and distribution of ECNs for tooling changes.
  • Transfers product to the assigned area of manufacturing from the current process
  • Consults with the Process Engineering group on how the product is used, which dimensions are most critical, and which dimensions should be controlled.
  • Aids and provides support in the planning of new processes.
  • Assists senior engineering personnel with the development of detailed tool drawings.
  • Orders raw material, tools, and any other hardware required for prototype run.
  • Spends time on the shop floor physically assisting manufacturing personnel with tooling assembly, machine setup, and prototype runs.
  • Submits samples to Process Engineering for evaluation.
  • Assists senior engineering personnel in making whatever tooling changes, machine adjustments, or process changes are required to produce an acceptable part.
  • When an acceptable part is created, oversees the complete and permanent documentation of the process, machine settings, required tooling, updated layouts, etc.
  • Improves productivity.
  • Strives to improve tool life.
  • Tracks tool life and makes suggestions for improvements in tool design, method of tool manufacture, tool material, and heat treatment.
  • Facilitates experimentation by providing detailed drawings and working with the Tool Room or outside vendors to obtain experimental tools.
  • Assists shop personnel in the assembly of tools, machine setup, and the running of tool life studies.
  • Documents results and works with cost accountants to analyze results on the basis of total product cost.
  • Strives to reduce setup time in the assigned area of manufacturing.
  • Coordinates efforts with senior engineering personnel and follows through on proposed hardware changes by obtaining and installing them into production environments.
  • Creates documentation aid, which will reduce setup time for recurring jobs.
  • Provides engineering assistance to the assigned area of manufacturing, as needed, to maintain acceptable production levels.
  • Maintains availability to manufacturing personnel to troubleshoot and assist in the setup and running of scheduled production runs.
  • Offers suggestions and implements tooling changes, as needed, to keep the assigned area of manufacturing running and prevent or eliminate recurring production problems.
  • Strives to improve process capability when required product tolerances and SPC techniques indicate the need
  • Suggests tooling design changes and facilitates experimentation by providing detailed drawings of experimental tools.
  • Suggests and facilitates experimentation with process enhancements such as better lubricants, raw material changes, and machine adjustments.
  • Suggests product design changes that will improve product quality, performance, and make it easier to manufacture.
  • Expedites the production of experimental product.
  • Qualifies experimental product with Process/Application Engineering Group.
  • Documents all process and tooling changes for approved product changes.
  • Long Range Facility, Equipment, and Process Improvements Support.
  • Keeps informed of new industry developments by reviewing trade journals and attending shows, conventions, and seminars.
  • Selects new developments potentially beneficial to the company, learns more about them, and if warranted, presents them to management for further investigation.
  • Follows through as instructed by management on selected new developments.
  • Strives to perform job duties at a consistently high level of professionalism and thoroughness, utilizing knowledge, training, and prior work experience.
  • Employs cooperation, open-mindedness, and creativity to confront and complete challenging work assignments.
  • Maintains a record of time spent on various duties.
  • Maintains a written record of the current status of all assigned projects and keeps direct supervisor informed at all times.
