Requirements

Juris Doctorate degree
7+ years of complex litigation experience at a law firm and/or in-house legal department
Proven significant trial, arbitration, and litigation experience in complex commercial, consumer, or class action litigation
Proven strategic thinker with demonstrated experience evaluating and determining best legal course of action to meet business needs
Proven good standing in one or more jurisdictions
Proven well-developed written and verbal communications and presentation skills
Proven ability to build and maintain rapport with superiors, peers, subordinates, internal business partners, and external company contacts

Nice To Haves

First chair trial or arbitration experience
Experience collaborating across matrixed business and legal environment
Experience providing advice to senior business leaders
Knowledge of healthcare law, including ERISA and/or Knox-Keene
Proven roll-up-your-sleeves, team first attitude; ability to collaborate and work in a team environment

Responsibilities

Manage defensive litigation and arbitration for the enterprise
Identify, select, and proactively oversee outside counsel in connection with all aspects of litigation and arbitration
Represent the organization at depositions, mediations, hearings, arbitrations, and trials
May provide legal counsel in connection with internal investigations, subpoenas, and responses to government inquiries
Protect the organization's rights in connection with disputes, arbitration, and litigation
Develop, maintain, and leverage deep knowledge of healthcare law and the healthcare industry, including UnitedHealthcare's commercial and government programs lines of business, in connection with job duties
Work collaboratively with other areas of the Legal Department, including the Clinical, Contracting, Operational, Regulatory, and Compliance teams
Provide legal advice and services on issues concerning the rights, obligations, risks, and privileges of the organization
