Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate degree
  • 7+ years of complex litigation experience at a law firm and/or in-house legal department
  • Proven significant trial, arbitration, and litigation experience in complex commercial, consumer, or class action litigation
  • Proven strategic thinker with demonstrated experience evaluating and determining best legal course of action to meet business needs
  • Proven good standing in one or more jurisdictions
  • Proven well-developed written and verbal communications and presentation skills
  • Proven ability to build and maintain rapport with superiors, peers, subordinates, internal business partners, and external company contacts

  • First chair trial or arbitration experience
  • Experience collaborating across matrixed business and legal environment
  • Experience providing advice to senior business leaders
  • Knowledge of healthcare law, including ERISA and/or Knox-Keene
  • Proven roll-up-your-sleeves, team first attitude; ability to collaborate and work in a team environment

Responsibilities

  • Manage defensive litigation and arbitration for the enterprise
  • Identify, select, and proactively oversee outside counsel in connection with all aspects of litigation and arbitration
  • Represent the organization at depositions, mediations, hearings, arbitrations, and trials
  • May provide legal counsel in connection with internal investigations, subpoenas, and responses to government inquiries
  • Protect the organization's rights in connection with disputes, arbitration, and litigation
  • Develop, maintain, and leverage deep knowledge of healthcare law and the healthcare industry, including UnitedHealthcare's commercial and government programs lines of business, in connection with job duties
  • Work collaboratively with other areas of the Legal Department, including the Clinical, Contracting, Operational, Regulatory, and Compliance teams
  • Provide legal advice and services on issues concerning the rights, obligations, risks, and privileges of the organization
