About The Position

This opportunity is available to retired UMOS only The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe and fair city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between the people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation. The License Division covers the licensing of all firearms in New York City and the application processes for sound amplification device and parade permits. The NYPD License Division is responsible for the application process, screening, and issuing of various types of handgun licenses, as well as rifle and shotgun permits. The NYPD reviews and approves applications for parade permits, which are organized by the Mayor's Office of Citywide Event Coordination and Management. The License Division is seeking Retired Uniformed Members of Service (UMOS) to fill positions as Associate Investigators Level I Part-Time (P/T) to assist with investigations pertaining to applicants seeking handgun and rifle/shotgun licenses. The Associate Investigators I (P/T) will be responsible for conducting interviews and investigations of candidates applying for handgun licenses; process various applications for carrying handguns; determine and ensure applicant meets requirements for license requested; research various databases and contact references to substantiate information submitted by applicant; and notify applicant of approval or appeal process for denial of handgun permit. Requirements

  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and five years of satisfactory, full-time experience as an investigator evaluating credit worthiness, searching for assets, verifying information concerning education, experience, and other personal qualifications bearing upon character and fitness for employment, or performing investigations involving the research, compilation and/or location of evidence or information in order to build a case or uncover activities of a criminal, corrupt, unlawful or unethical nature
  • An associate degree or 60 semester credits from an accredited college and four years of satisfactory, full-time experience as described in "1" above
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of satisfactory, full-time experience as described in "1" above
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to "1", "2", or "3" above
